INIERSCHOLASTIC
MEET FOR RKE
At the meeting last week of the rep-
resentatives of the Interm'hoiastic Ath-
ietic Committee. District Number 3, the
board voted to accept the invitation of
the Rice Committee on Outdoor Sports
for the use of Rice Fieid during the
track meet. Accordingiy the district
track meet will be heid at Rice on Apri)
16th and 17th.
Interest in high schoo! athietics al-
ways forms tasting memories toward
the university, and oftttmes secures a
prospective athiete for the coiiege.
The counties composing the Inter-
schoiastic District are: Gaiveston, Mata-
gorda. Harris, Brazoria, Chambers and
Fort Bend.
MRS. ASA C. CHANDLER
DIES SUDDENLY
The students and faculty were griev-
ed to team of the death of Airs. Asa C.
Chandier iast week. Mrs. Chandter had
been iii for some time, but her condition
was never iooked on as extrenteiy seri-
ous, and so her death was a great shock
to the academic community.
The body wiii be taken to California
for buria!, which wiii necessitate Dr.
Chandier's absence for the remainder of
the term. Dr. Edgar Altenburg has
taken charge of Dr. Chandier's ciasses.
Friends and students sympathize
most deepiy with Dr. Chandier in his
sorrow, and his classes at the univer-
sity have joined in sending ftorai offer-
ings. Mr& Chandier wiii be pleasantly
remembered as a frequent chaperon at
the various social functions of the'uni-
versity.

tension Lectures has been announced.
The series opened Monday iast at the
City Auditorium, with Dr. Stockton Ax-
son's subject. "Some British Poets of
Liberation." These iectures are open to
the public without cost and to ali the
students who are desirous of attending.
They begin at 4:30 and ciose not iater
than 5:30. A compiete program foi-

IMPROVEMENTS TO BE
MADE AT COMM. HOUSE
Work is now under way to erect at
the Community House an outdoor pa-
villion. A pergola is now being made
running out south front the east wing,
which with the south wing, will form
a court, open at one end. Fiowers will
be planted, and a lawn will be sowed.
Chairs and tables wiii be placed around.
Here, under a canopy of creeping vines,
cold drinks will be served. The court
wilt open into the dance hall, so that
refreshments might be enjoyed between
dances, during the warm months to
come.
AXSOX SI'HAKS THROUGHOUT
TEXAS.
Dr. Stockton Axson. who is always in
demand as a public orator left iast
week for Palestine. He will give a se-
ries of lect-ures under the auspices of
the Daughters of the American Revolu-
tion. Returning for his extension ier-
ture Monday, ho leaves again Wednes
day for McAHen and the Rio Grande
Valley, where he will make three
speeches tinder the supervision of the
Public Schools and the Chamber of
Commerce. In the following week. Dr.
Axson will go to San Antonio, where he
wiH make two talks under the auspices
of the Woman's College Club. Der. t
Caidwell was originally scheduled to d^
!ivcr these last two lectures, but due -o
the dean's sore throat. I)r. Axson !,as
kindly consented to [til his vacancy.
Of course, Dr. Axson's classes miss
him exceedingly, but they realize what
a great advertisement he is to Rice an i
unselfishly give hint up.
