ORIGIN OF THE WOBB BOGUS,
—The word bogus is a corruption
of the name of one Borghese, a very
corrupt individual, who, in 1836
juid 1837, did a tremendous busi-
ness in the way of supplying the
great West and portions of the
Southwest with counterfeit bills
and bills on fictitious banks.% The
Western people fell into the habit
of shortening the name of Bor-
ghese to that of Bogus, and his
bills, as well as all others of like
character, were universally styled
by them "bogus currency." By an
easy and not very unnatural tran
sitica, the word is now applied to
other fraudulent papers? such
sham mortgages, bills of sale,
stocks, bonds, conveyances, etc,
While President Grant was at-
tending the fair at Westminster,
Md., recently, a poor old negro
woman grasped him by the hand
and exclaimed, with the tews

OFFICE OF THE DAILY MSHCUttX. t
Oct. 16, U7S. J
Yesterday we foaud a livelier and better
feeling prevailing iu business circles, and an
activity visible upon the streets to which
they have been strangers for some weeks.
The arteries ot trado- have been opened
again, and the business of our city relieved
from any danger of commercial embolism.
Our merchants were smiling and happy, be-
cause every mail was the bearer of fresh
and, in some cases, heavy orders. The lazy
drayman was ajousediato activity, and made
to clearly understand that- he could no lofl-
gor take hi3 otium cttm dig. He in turn
swore at his.sleepy mtde, and urged him to
something nearer a two-forty gait than his
mechanical motiou for the past month.
Clerks were sent spinning among stacks of
boxes, barrels and bales; shipping clerks,
packers and book-keepers ^vere kept
in a state ff animation bordering upon per-
petual motion, and the "bosses" were
stalking around superintending with an air
of importance decidedly refreshing. The
out-look iu every direction brightens, aud
we feel-fiat "the silver lining" of this
dark commercial cloud is now being turned
toward us. The whole community shares
the buoyancy of the tradesmen and an
easier monetary feeling prevails every-
where.
The sales of the day were comparatively
large, and embraeed purchases in every line
of goods. Dry goods were especially ac-
tive, sinco the country dealer's stock is
hhort and unsuited to the Beason. Winter
goods ate in demand and large quantities
are being shipped. Prints, also, are
active, and one house alone ex-
pects to dispose of an hundred
eases before Saturday night. For several
days, notions hate been in demand,
and large orders from the country have been
filled. Boots and shoes are also ordered in
moderately Urge quantities, at fair figures.
The feeling iu di'y goods houses is conse-
quently at "high^pressure," and promises
to remain so for some tithe to come.
Iu groceries there was considerable move-
ment, sicd tiealeiS were fidly employed in
filling orders .for the country from stock
goods. The necessaries of life, embracing
every variety of family supplies, were
called-for in largo quantities and at fair
prices. Large houses were working their
full forces, and the evidences of the trade
were such as to cause hope for a large in-
crease before the end of the week.
In money matters the feeling was even
better than last week. Collections are still
slow, where the amounts are large, but
there is much money afloat, and, everybody
manages to get a little of it. The financial
pressure in if ew York is not yet fully relieved
and since it is the great money center of the
country, every city must feel the effects, to
some extent, of any stringency iu that quar-
ter. But our banks are well supplied with
currency to .meet aft demands and have
surplus-fer accommodations upon approved

money market this week than last. Money
can be had oa terms %ot exactly easy, but
at rates which are a large improvement upon
recent figures. Hie banks are in good con-
dition, having judiciously engineered their
way through the panic and called m all their
means, as possible. All the money
demanded by the requirements of trade can
be supplied. Thje speculations in regard to
a return to specie payments and Grant's
ipse dixit upon the financial crisis have hot
affected the premium upon gold in these
parts to such aA extent as id other places.

Thorough Cures Warranted!
Iu this Institute all Chronic and Sexual Diseases-
of all forms and characters wiU be cured promptly
and thoroughly by eminent German Physicians.
Persons who are Buffeting from youthful errors
and dissipation, and who are doomed to an early
grave, almost to a oertalnty, will be safely cured
within a very short time. Patients, whose consti-
tutions have been undermined by Inexperienced
physicians, will find prompt relief if they apply to
lils Institute without delay.
As it is a noted fact that the drags and medi-
cines used in this country are in macy instances
unreliable, we have resolved only to use directly
imported medicines. Each patient will bo receiv-
ed and consulted privately and unseen by any third
person. Those living at a distance will be advised
orractly, if they give prompt answers to the ques-
ions propounded to them. No payment in ad-
vance demanded of responsible parties until the
cure is accomplished. "
