Why iflidnldmy heart grow faint ?
Oh! wiiv-should it flatter and pine.
Whoa her*cheek ia aflamo at ardent words
From more eloquent lips than mine ?
Why should tny soul grow dark •
When sho coldly sweeps me by;
When no lovelight, lit by a gentle voice,
Leaps into her splendid eye ?
. .• / . •
Should a man bo a childish thing-
Should a man's heart shrink from fate,
Though that fate be loss of a woman's
lore.
And black with* the frowns of hate?
Forget all her dazzling ways—
Turn away from her starry eye?,
And with tight shut teeth, and a man's
' bold strength,
Hunt the world for a nobler prize.
'
I'd rather my heart would break,
And my eyes be wet with teys,
Than to «oop from my manhood's royal
throne
For bliss in a love like her's.
■* . t •
..an 13 proud, and brave, and true;
Woman fickle, false and fair.
His vows are sacred as Holy Writ;
Her's fly on the empty air. ...
Henee a scorn shall wreath my lips—
FU be no woman's cring slave;
And bury this love where it should belong—
Deep down in an unmarked grave, f

Bexae Cotjkty.—Some ruf-
fian tried to rock a young man
to ^ep eternally, in San An-
tonio^Monday evening, but was
shot at, and retreated to safer
quarters -The urchins of San
Antonio are not in favor of
"lights shining in dajkness," and
hence stone the street lamps.. - -
A Mr. MeKinney was tried and
fined $100 last week for thrash-
ing a poor orphan who drives a
hack for his d%ily bread "St.
Mark's Episcopal Church, on
Travis Park, from appearances,
will, jvhen completed, be an or-
nament to our city, and one of
the handsomest churches in it,"
says the Daily Herald, of San
Antonio.
McLennan County. — The
Waco Advance relates the follow-
ing, which is certainly a strange
hisus naturae; "A curious freak
of nature was brought to our city
yesterdayfcin the shape Of a white
deer. It was captured by Mr.
Henry Hickman, on the Colorado
river, in Burnet county, last sum-
mer. Whether the animal is a
deer or an antelope is difficult to
say, and the question must be
left for some of our scholars in
"zoology" to decide, but it is
"white," and will likely become
somebody's pet, as it is as tame
as a lamb."
Panola County— There
were twenty^one marriages in
this county during December,
with a majority of one in favor
ot the, whites.... The Watchman
has been presented with a sweet
potato, with a pretty well devel-
oped body, minus the arms and
legs, with almost perfect month,
eyes, eyebrows and ears. It
looks just about as intelligent as
a monkey Two gentlemen of
Carthage have imported from
Kentucky a pairof blooded hogs,
at a cost of §120. They can §ell
the increase at $12 per head
The Watchman has this account
of a brutal and mysterious mur-
der : A negro boy by the name
of Bill Tally, living on the place
of Mr. Newton Fite, was found
dead near where he was at work,
on Wednesday evening last. He
was shot in several places, seem-
ingly with a shotgun and six-
shooter. The negro is represent-
ed as having been very overbear-
ing and insulting, especially
when drinking, but this is no
reason why he should have befen
foully dealt with, as he seems to
have been ... - The following item
explains itself, and we are sure
many other exchanges could
make the same complaint \yith
justice: ''Those candidates who
announced their names in the
Watchman for office, and only
wanted a few days indulgence,
are notified that, in some in-
stances, more than .a hundred
days have passed, and still they
have not come forward with the
one thing needful—the thing that
makes the printer's heart glad—
in faet, the only thing that will
run a newspaper Carthage
people object to having their
town charter revived, and muni-
cipal government under it, be-
cause it is proposed to pay the
City Marshal $50 per month sal-
ary.
Dumas' Retort.—Prior to the
production of the younger Dumas'
play, "Monsieur Alphonse," he
was at Dieppe, and was accosted
by a grand lady of aristocratic
lineage, whom he met in the pop-
ular lounging-place. The con-
versation ran thus:
Lady—Is it true, Monsieur Du-
mas, that you have given up
writing plays ?
Dumas—On the contrary,
Madame, I am preparing at this
moment a comedy for ttye Gym-
nase.. / •
Lady—Ah, yes—another piece
displaying the peculiarities of the
demi-mmdelife, I suppose.
Dumas—Oh, no; my new piece
deals only with life among ladies
of the best society.
Lady (sne€ftngly)—Andwhere,
pray, have you etudied that life?
Dumas—Jn my own family,
madam.
A Nevada judge, after a jury
had been impaneled, and counsel
was ready to proceed, pulled oat
a revolver, and judicially re-
marked : If any man goes to
frolicking around in this court-
room during the trial of this
cause I shall interrupt him in his
career." The strictest decorum
prevailed in that courtroom.
"At midnight of last Wednes-
day the gate of eternity opened
to let in amid the great throng
of departed centuries the soul of
the (lying year. Under the
twelfth stroke of . the brazen
hammer of the city clock the
patriarch went out, and the stars
of the night were the funeral
torches.® This is DeWitt Tal-
atage'a method of stating it.
