mittee for investigation, I ask your per-
mission with the view of saving time
to allow me to omit reading the itemized
total receipts and disbursements for the
twenty-four months since my last report,
as they are hereto attached and made
a part of this report for further inspec-
tion and filing, and really form the basis
from which this report is compiled.
By reading to you my trial balance it
will give you the total of all receipts
the cash on hand in each fund and the
various and sundry accounts that the
expenditure of these funds have been
used, giving jrou the total paid to each.
(See tables on pages 3 and 4.)
Financial.
Comparing our financial condition with
that of two years ago, I am pleased to
say notwithstanding our heavy death
rate, it shows we have gained in our
resources the sum of ten thousand eight
hundred ninety-nine and 50-100 dollars,
while this does not represent what we
should have gained, it is far better than
I hoped for one year ogo. In 1913 our
death rate was excessive, but it has been
far better this year, in fact all this net
gain has been made in 1914 in our re-
sources.
You will notice in the report I read
that we had paid since our last meeting
two years ago $12,450.00 on account of
old age claims, which has reduced our
liabilities that much and yet there is no
way by which we can show a direct
credit in our resources on account of
these claims paid.
Membership.
We have been passing through some
perilous times since our last meeting.
We reported two years ago 5012 mem-
bers We have written since 2806 mem-
bers, making a total of 7818 and we now
have 5200 in good standing, which shows
a lapse list of 2505 members and 113 by
death. This looks discouraging and
it is discouraging. It is the one problem
all fraternal and old line companies arc
using their best effort to solve. If I only
had the secret and desired to sell it I
could buy this great State of Texas and
all her wealth. This will give you my
idea of the problem.
A few years ago I attended the Texas
Fraternal Congress at Dallas, and a very
well posted member stated in the open
meeting that eighty per cent of all busi-
ness written by all the Fraternal Orders
in the United States belonging to the
National Fraternal Congress in 1913
lapsed, it was astounding to me since I
knew all the large and strong orders in
the United States were members of this
National Fraternal Congress, but since I
returned home another man, president
