IIOLLANO GJN AS A SIEDICINEV
In* our last number, we accompanied the public'^,
(ion of a circular on this subject from our fellow citi-
Udolplio Wolff, e^q., with a brief commenlarj,
"-essive of our own views. . Since then we have
employing this agent, aud llv'sy'ar with favora-
sound andSJ bie results. But we are in receipt ofseverafcoiniriu-
uieations on 'the subject from medical men, which
serve to show'that Mn Wolff's Aromatic Schiodam
■Schnapps is very extensively in use, aud iu the hands
of physicians is proviug itself as a stimulating diuret-
te to be:euTi\uenlly successful, after other ni '3ica|^g.
wth thisiftteul had been tried in vain. In one of ISP
cases thus reported, abdqminal dropsy has been cured,
and the necessity of tapping aveited ; aud in another
distressing case of gravel, so Called, has been eit-
tirf'y removed by the passage of a calculus of con-
siderable size, which is ascribed to the use of oily
two battles of .this* articlo.
We know not the object of wjgf- Wolff.in designa-
ting his preparation.by the singularly uuuphcueoua
name of;'i<Sclruapps,>> nor of denominating it in his
advertisements-tho '"Concentrated 'l^nteture id Juni-
per," in stead of perpetuatiug its ancient name of Hol-
land Gin. It is tru^hat he admits it to be nothing
else than the liilterwtieie in its ptir* 8t«te, unadul-
erated by uoxious drugs; and hence, he co'ntradis-
tiuguishes it froiiF Gin of commerco, nearly all o?
which it is well known is inanufactured t^re aud
elsewhere from inferior whiskey and refuse drugs.—
The name lie has given kjjtowever, iiiay serve" the
puspose ofdcyignaling this srftcle as.Mo'pared exclu-
sively for medical purposes, aud thasggunmend it te
physicians,: for whose' conyeiiience it is on sale only by-
reputable drnggi.sts and apothecaries.
As respects its" medicinal and curative effects, We •

" ' ' medical liquors.
In common, I presume, with rnauy others of the
profession, I received some months since a circular,
addressed to "Physicians throughout the United
States," by Mr. Udolpho" Wolff, the impoiter, 22
Beaver street, inviting aaincdicaljmd chemicarexam-
ination of a riewarticle of Hollaisd Gin, inamifactured
by himself, at Schiedam, in Holland, by a peculiar
process, aud put up for medical use, underi^ipspme-
wh;.t Dutch title of'Scliiedam Aromatic S^TShapps."
The circulsr claims for this article au emiucntlyjjj.ii-
perior degree Of purity, aroma, flavor aiyteneditottiil
fficacy- ; and jjff-rs, moreover, a gr-ituWTOs supBly
of it to any pi^siciauwkp may feel disposed io tt>st'
these claims in a scientific and professional manner.
Being familiar w'ith 'tttriiM'acts in relation' to* the
.use of Gin jhs a medicine,* naiiiely: fiist, that when,
pure it is absolutely iuviilUable, end not to be ex-;,
changed for any other remedy known to the profeS-S
aion, in many complaints, both acute and chronic. -,
secondly, that among the multitude of ill made uud
.adulteraled liquors with which til.' country abounds,
a pure Holland Giu is scaroely lo be obtained at any
price ; and tl$ygjj!y, that t he .rad i c a Ii m p u r it ifs of any

or, instead of the lighter; wfiichFimpurities usualf
result from the mercenary system of. au excessive
distilla tion of the mate riiils employed; I resolved to ac
cept of Mr. Udolj^K) Wtlff's challenge, and put hii
'5<Schiedam Aromatic Schnapps" to the test of rigid
analysis. And I was induced to thiijUotwithstaud-
ing the proprietor's long standing11 and r puted ro-
spectibility as^en importor, because the purity ofgiii
abovn that of every othor spirituouaJignor emi|fej ed

the community, inasmuch as it is subjectbiftvo dis-
tinct causes of pernicious imparity; namel^^he in

moreover, the "Aromatic Schuap|flPStrongly riKionj.
mended by a physician and writer of no less influence
than Dr. D. M. Reese, of the New York Medical
Gazette, and by many of the most eminent members
of the profession, who I had every reason to suppose
had obtained any other than empirical evidence «of
its pharmaceutical puriJLv and value. • I therefore re-
solved to inform medtfiW men at least, (or tho sake-
of the public at lajge^p.fjthe results of my investigu
lion, whether th<^~fmfved fa'vqrable^or otherwise
to tho character of the arlicle, and ther iiitcrpit of
its proprietor
The results aro as follows: Searching first for the
oil of Juniper, by distillajjop, I obtained an oil fioni
two quarts of the liquid, wUqao specific eiavity-was
0.832,and whose bo^h'g'.giQflfwas 313 dpgffes, noi
did successiye re - dist}ily^ft,itie I d any oil of greato't
gravity, or "of any other Shd:whatever. The same
quantity of common HdMaud Gin, «o called, yielded
an excessive amount, by re-dit4iU<)tionf of oil, weigh-
ing 0.871, with the boiling point ef-S42 degr.

of temperance Slid ph%u|hropy ?o justly complain,
instead of that satiety^fwS astideousness of taste for
which the drinkers of pure liquors are distinguished

Accordingly, I feel bound to say that I regard ibid
gin as being in every respect pre-eminently-pure.and
deserving of medical patronage^. It is indebted lor
jtp miperiorily, I doubt not, to fcound and select nil-
ials, and to that peculiarly moderate method of dis-
tillation which leaves the heavier aud le«3 volatile
and essential oils jgth of, tho bailey and the borry,
behind in tha stin. JThii, also, iseufficient to account
for the refitted aroma of this over other gi us ; cut iu
regard to the special qualties of ^the Itnlisn Juniper
o«rry, of which the manufacturer sp.hk,! in his cir.
cnlar, 1 have no ohemical knowledge, nor v/herein
its lighter oil differs from that of the juniper commu-
nis. I find that the pure oil of both poiaiizes to the
loft, and yields, with hydrochloric acid, a liquid cam-
phor. This acid being in the stomach as t. princip
component part of tho gastric juice,, probably creati
this material from the oil, and renders it the valuab.
aifibsttble stimulant for which it was^formerly, and
will probably again be renowued.
