Mrs. Langtry in New Orleans.
IMr folks and little folks, everybody In
society, and everybody out of it, have
been on the tip-toe of expectation ever
since the bill-posters on the walls
around town tlrst Hashed on the coming
of Mrs. Langtry; the much-talked of
beantv in both English and American
society. There is probably no actress
or woman who lias created as great a
sensation from Maine to Louisiana, from
New York to California, as has tills
English beauty, and at last she has ar-
rived among us.
A reporter of the States stepped on
board the private car occupied by Mrs.
Langtry, at Hay St. Louis, and found
the renowned English beauty lolling in
a comfortable easy cliair. The private
car furnished by Mr. Abbey for his cele-
brities is handsomely appointed and
supplied with comfortable loung-
ing chairs and nil things con
ducive to easy traveling. There
were quantities of fruits and flowers
scattered belter skelter around, and a
general air of "sweet disorder" charac-
terized the appartment.
The opinion of all critics has been
that there are thousands of women in
America who might establish a better
claim than the Jersey Lily to being a
professional beauty. However that
may be, certain it is that Mrs. Langtry
may be described as a most graceful,
lithesome woman, possessed of the win
ning, sympathetic personality that
characterizes such women as Christii e
Nilsson. She is possessed of that good-
breeding and culture that familiarity
with the highest social world naturally
imparts. There is that in the turn of
her graceful, pretty head, in the Arm
yet willowy sway of her ligure, and in
the conttur of the whole that bespeaks
the cultured woman of the world. Her
profile Is decidedly Grecian, clear cut and
delicate; her eyes are blue, wide open
and wandering—very pretty eyes they
are, too; her face, as a whole, is winning
and pleasing. She is charming in con-
versation, and, it must be confessed,
must be a peril to male hearts. She
made a pretty picture leaning back in
her chair, with a great bunch of golden
oranges in her lap. Her traveling dress
was of dark llannel, loose and flowing,
almost monkish in its cut, with wide,
open sleeves, the loose folds gathered in
at the waist with a heavy olack silk
cord. A light tan-colored handkerchief
was knotted around her throat. She
wore no jewel of any description, and
h«r brown hair was combed in the
famous Langtry knot, slightly frowzled,
ti> be sure. Her arms are long and sym-
metrical, her hands white and well

Western Railway Construction.
An article in the current number of
the Ifallway Age is devoted to a report
K)f the construction during 1S82 of roads
on which ti'ack was laid in the live great
Westtrn states north of the Ohio and
east of the Mississippi river. Their in-
crease of mileage aggregated 2,077
miles, or nearly 20 per cent, ol tlia total
new mileage of the entire country, a re-
markable proportion, considering the
fact that these states already contained
about 20 per cent, of the total mileage
of the country, and that three of them
average about one mile of railway to
evu'v six miles of area, while vast
regions west of the Mississippi
j-iver are still totally unsupplied
with, steam roads. The report says:
As we continue the record by states and
territories some further interesting
facts will be developed. Our totals for
these states differ but little from those
tlrst given, though a few corrections
have been made, mostly resulting from
finding that some mileage credited to
1882 was actually laid to the latter part
of 1881, though not operated and not re-
ported. We have been obliged in a few
cases to disagree with the figures of state
railroad commissioners — as, for in-
stance, in Wisconsin, where some miles
were credited bv that officer in advance
of actual track-laying. We desire, how-
ever, to express our obligations to Com-
missioner Williams, of Michigan, and
Commissioner Sabine, of Ohio, for infor-
