. questions difficult to solv? are pro-
pounded to yon for information on'
various subjects, 1 would respectfully
ask your-opinion of a matter which is
diiBenlt for> me to decide; It is this.
I have three hired freed girls, minors,
14 to 16 years of age, without parents,
who are moderately industrious and
obedient to orders generally, but are
rather spirited, having sererol times
fought and scratched each other's
foeea as well as torn their Clothes.—
No great? damage done, true, bnt if
continued might result in serious
damage as well as a bad example be-
fore white children. Moral suasion
has signally failed to correct the evil.
Being mintorsi and without parents, a
little of' the Old-fashioned use of the
rod would do much good. Would the
Chief of the Freedmen's Bureau ob-
ject to reasonable correction, which
would certainly prove very benefi-
cial? This village is not incorpora-
ted, and no Provost Marshal here. It
Would certainly beaftteltohave such
girls anrested and imprisoned in a
ootuityjail. In ^ll such cases I detest
cruelty or too great ^verity, for they
arsnot posted as to the new order of
things. Please give yoar views, and
oblige. Vefy Respectfully,^'

A few days since we published an
account of a prisoner breaking jail on
Saturday nlgnt last'. * The holes in the
walls have not yet been repaired, and
on Wednesday night, from certain
demonstrations as well as threats
made by the negroes now confined
there, the Sheriff jave orders to put
a' number of the Freedmen in irons,
iliere bflng upwards of twenty in all.
As soon as this was known inside, sev-
eral commenced *cursing and taking
oaths that uo white man should put
"irons" on them. The Sheriff enter-
ed with his Deputy, and both were
driven back by the "Freedmcn."
Sheriff Bomain then called upon the
"guard," who were met by a shower
<$ "brickbats," knocking, two down
Snd wounding a third.
The guard then charged upon tl e
J orators, when one of the " ring-
rs" by the name of Ehtm. seized
of a mfcsket in the hands of the
Sargeant, who immediately discharg-
ed Us piece, killing ETam instantly,
the ball entering on the left lower
jaw, passing out through tne upper
portion of hfe skull oil the right side.
Several of the guard then attempted
to fire their muskets, and one of them
. slightly with a
bayonet. The prisoners were finally
forced back into their cells and quiet
restored. The Coroniei held an in-
quest this morning, and a verdict iu
accordance with the facts rendered.

TBEASUBY DEPARTMENT,

, Washington, Dec. 15, '65. j
Sir :~Your letter of the 6th instant
has been received. You write as fol-
lows: "In estimating the tax or
daty on gross receipts, income, rental
values, £c., where the same has-been
reoeived, or realized in gold or-silver,
mfist it be reduced to th£ iralue in
PWH^4W to &
tomal Revenue totes should be as-
sessed upon a ciirrency basis. It is
not sufficient that they be assessed
upon a J?<nd basis, even though they
are collected in gold. If this were
dpne, thA$600 exemption, allowed in
ie assessment of income taxes,
Wouldr when gold, for instance, is
worth a premium of fifty per cent., be
tantamount to ah exemption of $900;
and while a man in one portion of the
country would be required to pay an
inqdme tax of $1500, another man in
a dmerent portion of the country,
having the same actual income, would
pay none. The same inequality
would arise in respect to all the ex-
emptiona, exceptions and limitations
of titie law. ' - .
come, gross receipts, &c., should,
therefore, be reduced to a currency
basis, befobie the taxes are assessed.

War in the Jf reedmcnBureau.—
A small specimen brick Of war can be
found in the School Department of
the Freedmens' Bureau, which bids
fair to be both tragic and comic.
There being a lady in the case we
shall mention, no names, but cristen
the parties respectively, Boanerges
and Madamoisselle. Boanerges is re-
ported to have quarrelled with a lady
teacher, one Madamoisselle. That was
the emus belli does not, appear. We
are in blissful ignorance of whether
unrequited love or undue zeal tor
Sambo was the moving cause.
But the lady alleges that the gen-
tleman who unites with bis office of
pedagogue the various vocations that
Sam Weller would affix to the office
"Deputy Shepherd," told his Sunday
hearers not to send their children to
the lady, because she was "not a
Christian," Mademoiselle is a Catho-
lic, while he says his prayers to
another persuasion. This of course'
was an actual declaration of hostili-
ties, and made the lady—who by the
way has the most pluck, and mad as
a hornet with the hydrophobia. Bo-
anerges went sparking on Sunday
night, to the house where she boaTded
—she found him in the parlor sing-
ing: 1" Come ye Sinners Poor and
Needy." To order him off the
tmisea the ftrst tbjng* to bapg
i over the head with the' Bible, and
follow up the assault with a general
assortment of light reading was the
next. v
The devil will fly from holy water,
says the proverb. Our hero could
stand the bomb-shells of Zion, but
when the small shot of Ned Buntune
hit him between the eyes, he fled to
the rear, followed by. a bottle of Sozo-
dont, which, like Aaron's Ointment,
spread its fragrance around the skirts
of his coat-tail,.and victory perched
on the banner of petticoats. But
there is a serious side to all this. It is
reported that this* gentleman, who
psalm-sings and prays on a large
scale for the freedmen, has also had
an eye on their pockets. It is said,
with what truth we know not, that at
his Sunday morning exercises he has
made large collections on a'variety of
pretexts, which collections are sup-
posedly amount to a thousand dollars
inBpeeie. This is a matter for official
investigation, and if substantiated,
either the State's prison of banish-
ment will be the result. For neither,
public opinion nor Gen. Gregory will
permit any man to commit petty lar-
ceny under the cloak of religion and
benevolehcC. 1 Tridy the; ways of
those laboring in the interests of God
And humanity are mysterious and
