Composer of McMurry
Alma Mater Honored
At FTA Convention
McMurry brought out the spe-
cial welcome mat for one visitor
to the sixth annual state conven-
tion of the Future Teachers of
America which met on the Reser-
vation recently.
Dr. Everett A. Sheppard, head
of the education department at
East Texas State Teachers Col-
lege at Commerce was the visitor
rating special attention.
The reason Dr. Sheppard rates
so highly at the Reservation is
because back in 1923 while he
was Band Director of the Mc-
Murry Indian Band he composed
the Alma Mater which is still
being used and also the theme
song of Wah Wahtaysee, women's
service organization.
Dr. Sheppard came to Mc-
Murry as Band Director and in-
structor of wind instruments in
1923. Later he served in the Aca-
demy teaching mathematics and
science. He had been promoted
head of the history department
when he left McMurry in 1931.
