As the world commemorates the 50 th anniversary of the end of World
War II, this issue of Chieftain focuses on the McMurry University commu-
nity during the conflict. Life from 1941-45 was drastically affected as the
country went to war, and McMurry was no exception. Enrollment figures
severely declined, but the student body remained committed to carrying
on McMurry's ideals.
Change is good. We all need change in our lives to move forward - to
progress into new dimensions. Over the last several issues, we have been
making subtle changes to Chieftains format. This issue unveils some major
changes in the design and content of your alumni magazine. Many of the
changes have been made based upon what alumni have suggested at vari-
ous gatherings. The Chieftain editorial advisory board is taking your story
suggestions to heart. We plan to incorporate features in future issues on
topics you have suggested.
As we strive to serve you better, we are now making it easier for you to
send Class Notes information by fax or E-mail. And look for Chieftain in
your mailbox a little more often because we are increasing our publication
schedule (four per year) as well.
One of the biggest changes comes in the Indian Beat department, which
will provide an expanded account of campus events and other happenings
important to McMurry life. As McMurry alumni and friends, we share a
special bond. In visiting with several groups of alumni, I have discovered
there are many common threads that go beyond our diplomas. Thus, a
new regular feature, Alums Who..., makes its debut to spotlight a group
of alumni who have commonalities.
As we near our 75th anniversary, we are reminded of our rich heritages,
and thus, memories and excerpts from McMurry's history will also have a
regular place within the magazine.
The experiences we have gained by being associated with this university
are priceless and helped shape who we are today. Giving someone else the
opportunity to have those types of experiences is rewarding. The best gift
you can give your alma mater is a student, because within that student lies
McMurry's future.
Please keep in touch. Let us know what you think of the new design,
and share ideas of what you would like to see in your alumni magazine. ■
