Human Rights Campaign president Cheryl
Jacques warmly praised Log Cabin's initiative.
"We applaud the Log Cabin Republicans for
their efforts to show the President's support for
what it is — a shameful effort to use gay families
as a wedge issue in the election," Jacques said.
Halbrook said gay Republicans across the
country are outraged by President Bush's support
of the effort to amend the Constitution to limit
marriage to a man and woman. The national
organization and local chapters are seeing
unprecedented interest in joining the gay
Republican political group, she said.
"We've got people who have never been
members before joining our major donor group,"
Halbrook said. "They're having literally thou-
sands and thousands of people come in."
Halbrook said that the Dallas group is also see-
ing an enhanced interest in the effort to persuade
the GOP to back away from amending the
"We've had a lot of new people signing on,"
Halbrook said GOP leaders have approached
Log Cabin since Guerriero first went on the
attack about President Bush's stance.
"The feedback has been, 'We understand how
you disagree with this, but we still want you guys
to be with us,"' Halbrook said. "And our feed-
back to that is, 'We'll wait and see and make a
decision down the line.'"
Halbrook said she attended a speech by Bush
in Washington earlier in the week, and that he
avoided the subject of the proposed Federal
"He's not out there pushing it," Halbrook said.
"From everything I've heard he has not men-
tioned the amendment one time in public since he
made that announcement.
Halbrook said that she heard Sen. John Cornyn
speak at a Republican gathering in Dallas recent-
ly, and that his remarks about the amendment
"I made my feelings on the amendment known
to him, and the response I got from him surprised
me a little," Halbrook said. "He said that every-
body is just trying to figure out where they stand
on the issue right now. That's not the response I
Halbrook said that Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison
says that she supports the amendment when she
is asked, but otherwise she appears to ignore it.
'1 have not heard of any real involvement on
her end," Halbrook said.
Halbrook said that Log Cabin is holding a
national meeting in Palm Springs in April to con-
sider whether it will support Bush in the
"We're going to be having some pretty serious
discussions with our attendees and chapter presi-
dents to see how the group feels," Halbrook said.
Although they are near-unanimous in their dis-
agreement with President Bush, gay Republicans
appear to be "all over the map" as to how Bush's
endorsement of the amendment will affect votes
in the general election, Halbrook said.
"There are people who say I'm still a loyal
Republican, but I don't think I can support
Bush," Halbrook said. "There are other people
who say I can't be a single-issue voter. And there
are people who are undecided."
A native Texan is a plaintiff in Lambda Legal
Defense and Education Fund's latest effort to
win marriage rights for gay couples.
The organization has filed suit against the
State of New York on behalf of Daniel
Hernandez, 46, and Nevin Cohen, 42.
Hernandez said marriage came up when he
and Cohen started talking about adopting.
"We had been talking about... trying to create
an environment legally sound for a child,"
Hernandez said. In the process, the couple
became more aware of the significance of the
rights automatically given to married couples.
Hernandez, who lived in San Antonio until he
was a teen, said he was raised by a very nurtur-
ing and loving family but was also aware that, in
the world outside home, "people don't necessar-
ily believe in you or trust you."
"Growing up as a Chicano in Texas," instilled
him with a sense that he had to go "above and
beyond" to prove himself in society, Hernandez
Personally, his fight for the right to marry the
person he loves as just another obstacle minori-
ties face, he said.
