Authorities express concern about
resurgence of gonorrhea, syphilis
Problem especially acute among gay and bisexual men, experts say
By Dennis Vercher Senior Editor
A growing body of evidence shows that sexu-
ally transmitted diseases are a growing problem
among gay and bisexual men, according to
research reports presented at this week's National
STD Prevention Conference.
Items presented at the conference showed that
the challenges are on many fronts. A study by the
U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
showed that men who have sex with men who
have syphilis were 45 percent less likely to be
diagnosed with the disease than heterosexual
men. Thus, they remained infectious longer,
passing on the disease in an ever-growing spiral.
Men with male sexual partners were also less
likely than heterosexual men in the study to have
contact information for their partners.
The study was conducted in San Diego.
The findings suggest that traditional syphilis
control methods may not be as effective among
men who have sex with men as with other
groups, since syphilis prevention typically has
focused on identification and treatment of
patients and their partners.
Research conducted in Seattle and King
County showed a rapid emergence of gonorrhea
cases that were resistant to treatment with the
commonly used antibiotic, ciprofloxacin.
