As a resident and manager at the Courts apart-
ment complex, Margarita Trevino is bearing the
brunt of the closure of eastbound Cedar Springs
Road at the Dallas North Tollway.
There's the extra travel time it takes to make a
detour around the bridge — which is being
replaced — to the Oak Lawn commercial dis-
trict.
There's the noise from the construction, some
of which takes place at night.

Thursday, April 26. He is being held without bail
on a capital murder charge in the Dallas County

Oak Lawn interactive community police offi-

neighborhood, and he
worked as a male prosti-
tute.
He lived in vacant

Crews work on the Cedar Springs Road bridge over the Dallas North Tollway on Monday, April 23. The bridge, where the
eastbound lanes have been closed since October, is slated to reopen to traffic in both directions by early June. One of

area, he said.
Police plan to have victims in those robberies
view line-ups to determine if they recognize
Jenkins, Allen said.
Jenkins has been in custody since April 17 on
outstanding drug violation warrants unrelated to
the capital murder charge, Allen said.
"We've been working feverishly trying to put
a case together before we had to release him," he
said.

Dallas ounty Sherif "vents frustration about relentless criticism
Valdez initiates interview in attempt to set record straight about her
job performance; claims Dallas Morning News is skewering coverage
By Tammye Nash Senior Editor
Voters' distrust of everything connected to
longtime Republican Sheriff Jim Bowie's admin-
istration and the widespread fear of "business as
usual" helped sweep Lupe Valdez into office in
2004, making her the first woman, the first
Hispanic and the first lesbian to ever be elected
sheriff of Dallas County.
Now, Sheriff Valdez is expressing some frus-
tration of her own in an exclusive interview with
the Dallas Voice. The interview, initiated at the
request of the sheriff, marks a departure from her
previous policy of trying to avoid media expo-
sure rather than embracing it — a practice for
which she has been widely criticized.

row. Inspectors with the U.S. Department of
Justice were at the jail this week, and Valdez said
Wednesday she expected their report, due Friday,

But, the sheriff added, she also expected the
DOJ report to acknowledge some vast improve-
