Hunky's owner Rick Barton, who's preparing to move the 25-year-old eatery across Throckmorton, said the atmos-
phere on Cedar Springs reminds him of 1984. "I think the neighborhood has so much potential again," he said.

Hunky's to move to site of old coffee shop after renovation project
By John Wright News Editor
With all the changes planned for the Cedar
Springs strip, and with Hunky's celebrating its
25th anniversary in 2009, owner Rick Barton
figured it would be a good time to renovate
the iconic burger joint.
After Barton contacted his landlord to get
approval for the upgrades in January, he:
received an e-mail response informing him
that when the I^ase for Hunky's expires in
December, the rate would nearly double, from
about $30 per square foot to about $50.
The landlord said the increase was non-
negotiable, and Barton feared he'd have

FW to consider
trans protections
P
Task Force will also pursue
DP benefits for city employees
By Tammye Nash Senior Editor
FORT WORTH— The Fort Worth Human
Relations Commission this week voted unani-
mously in favor of a resolution calling for the
city to amend its anti-discrimination policy to
include protections for transgenders.
The resolution now goes to the new City
Manager's Diversity Task Force, and then on to
the City Council for final approval.
The city amended its nondiscrimination ordi-
nance in 2000 to include
protections based on sexu-
al orientation, becoming
one of the first cities in
Texas to do so. The vote to
add gender identity and
expression in the list of
protected classes came
during the commission's
regular meeting on Joel Burns
Tuesday night, July 28.
Human Rights
Commission member Lisa
Thomas said Wednesday,
July 29, that this week's
vote was the culmination
of more than a year's
work.
"The commission has
been working on this
issue since before I joined
more than a year ago," said Thomas, who was
appointed to the commission by openly gay
City Councilman Joel Burns.
"At our March meeting, some of the trans-
gender. community spoke to the commission,
telling the commissioners about theif lives and
the issues and discrimination they encounter
trying to live their lives/' Thomas said. "These,
citizen presentations were informative and very
moving."
Thomas said the resolution will be presented

Rainbow Lounge
GM: Bartender
wasn't intoxicated
when he left work
By John Wright News Editor
FORT WORTH — The general manager
of the Rainbow Lounge this week dismissed
speculation that a bartender killed in a car
wreck early Sunday, July 26 had been drink-
ing at the establishment prior to the acci-
dent.
Arlington police said Bradley Larson, 41,
was traveling at
speeds of up to 100
mph in his Honda
Accord when he rear-
ended an 18-wheeler
on eastbound
Interstate 30 at about
6:15 a.m.
Police; said they
believe the wreck may Bradley Larson
have been alcohol-related because they
found two closed containers of beer in
Larson's car. They also found a white pow-
dery substance that was identified through
field tests as an illegal substance.
The Tarrant County Medical Examiner's
Office is conducting toxicology tests to
determine Larson's blood-alcohol content,
and Arlington police are trying to figure out
where he'd been immediately prior to the
wreck.
If it's determined that Larson, who'd
worked on Saturday night, had been drink-
ing at the Rainbow Lounge after hours, it
could mean serious penalties for the bar
from the Texas Alcoholic Beverage
Commission.
