Went down to Presbytery at Ft.Worth, starting early
enough to spend all day Tuesday out at camp Eowie
prospecting for a war job. Found that Y.M.C.A. wcrk
is a closed door for men in the draft age. I kkew ]
therd was feeling against employing men of military
age but never knew before that they had actually
taken action prohibiting their employment. Found the
chaplaincy a sort of chance proposition, its desirability
being conditioned on the sortfcommanding
officers under whom you may happened to be placed.
I am not quite ready to join as a regular private,
tho if I thought lit my duty I would do so immediately.
On top of that the preachers at Presbytery, hearing cf
my strong inclination to enter war work set at me to
stay with my work here, and gave me lots of encourageme
to that end, which made me feel like perhaps I was not
doing right to plan too hastily entering war work.
Now I am settled down,so far as I see,for at least
several months diligent pushing this Stamford work.
It is uphill work, and possibly that has caused me tc
turn more readily to wal work than otherwise il might.
Not that straight out hard work would turn me away
to something easier, for war work is really harder;but
it is becoming more and more a Question in my mind as
to the worthwhile elements of this job in comparison
with work in the army.
Mr.Potter came up from Minetal Wells and preached
Lfor us yesterday: leaving this morning. We had communion
services while he was here.
I madeafour minute address at the picture show
St.night on the Third Liberty Loan.
