Alayne Elizabeth Watkins was born to the parentage of Mr & Mrs
Walter and Nora Ellis Watkins on November 24, 1912 in San
Marcos, TX. She graduated from Douglas High School in San
Antonio, TX, St. Philip's College, San Antonio, TX and Tillotson
College, (now Houston Tillotson University) Austin, TX. After
graduating she worked at Prairie View College for several years.
She later moved to San Francisco, CA where she worked at the
She returned to San Antonio in 1948 and was employed at
Kelly AFB as a Contract Cataloguer. There she met and married
Edward Sommers. She retired in the late seventies. Alayne enjoyed
fishing, watching television, cooking, cheering for "her" San
Antonio Spurs and attending performances of the San Antonio
Symphony. She and Sydney W. Matthews were married in January
1985. Both husbands preceded her in death.
Alayne has been a member of Holy Redeemer for thirty-two
years working in various capacities. She served for many years as
the Financial Secretary of the Knights of Peter Claver Ladies
Auxiliary, she was a member of the Ladies Sodality and also worked
with the Nutrition Program at Holy Redeemer. She faithfully
attended the First Sunday parties that were held at Holy Redeemer.
She leaves to cherish fond memories: cousins Samuel
Kuykendall, Jr., George E. Ellis, Jr., Rev Wardell Harris, San
Antonio, and Charlie Williams, San Marcos; nieces Teshawn Ellis
Evans (Brad), and Monaija Evans; nephew Isaac Alexander Evans;;
Garvis Ellis Shockley, Oklahoma; a special daughter Carlene W.
Hawkins, her church family and many friends.
