How do you get reams of
sensitive information from
one place to another in a mat-
ter of seconds?
That is the issue facing
Bastrop County as commis-
sioners try to figure out the
best method for getting infor-
mation between the sheriff's
office and the courts.
According to Emergency
Management Coordinator
Mike Fisher, the technology
is here, it's just a matter of
committing to spending the
money to get it all working.
On Monday, Dec. 15, at
a specially-called meeting,
Fi sher presented the court two
options. He said the difference
between the options comes
down to price and capacity.
Option 1 would cost the
county roughly $30,000.
"It has the capacity by
about three times to do what is
being done now," Fisher said.
"It's oversized for today's
needs."
That said, Fisher also
pointed out that even if the
county's needs grew to where
they were using the system
to capacity, the software and
technology would probably
be out of date by then.
Option 2 costs approxi-
mately $50,000 and is able to
handle about three times what
option 1 would handle.
"I recommended option
1," Fisher said.
The two options rely on
radiotelemetry, the reception
of data at a location remote
from the source of the data,
tromagnetic radiation as the
means of transmission.
In essence, what that
means is that as someone in
the district clerk office types
information in about an incar-
cerated person, those who
have access to that informa-
tion could see it immediately
in the sheriff's office.
"I also recommended that
they focus on a fiber optic
project in the future," Fisher
explained.
Fisher said that using
fiber optics is not new, but is
using radio-frequency elec- extremely reliable and works
