Truck Law Does
Not Take Effect
Until Jan'v, 1922
Becently there ha* been a good deal
said about the new truck law supposed
to he In effect, and opposition to It baa
developed great *trength. Sheriff Pur-
cell, however. I* in receipt of informa-
tion from the *tate highway depart-
ment to the effect that the Attorney
General ha* ruled that thi* new law
does not take effect until January 1.
The first information given out on
thia la* ni that If covered all classce
of truck* and that farmer* would he
taxed along with everyone else. The
Brand la toid that It dom not affect
faiiaet* at all. commercial trucks alone
being included, and of these only those

Early Friday morning 1 nited States Deputy Marshall
fW Holton. accompanied by several mwiittantx. arrived
here in a truck from Amarillo and served upon Sheriff C. S. ^ ^REPLfULY
Pureed a formal demand, signed by I nited States District '
Judge .lame* C. U ilson. for the complete fifty-nine cases of
< Hd Scotch. The Sheriff, breathing a *igh of relief, lent ev-
ery possible aid in getting that concent rated trouble trans-
ferred into the official truck, and soon ail evidenee of the
famous case, except the fast-dissapearing worry wrinkles in
the sheriff's face, had departed.
Sheriff Pureed stated most emphatically that' it was a
tremendous relief to get rid of the stuff. It is well known
that there are men who would knock an officer in the head
for that booze who would not steal even a postage stamp
! under ordinary conditions. The responsibility on the
sheriff was heavy, as he has no deputy jailer.
When the first count of the cases was made the night the
stuff was captured The Brand got it at sixty instead of fifty-
nine. The latter figure is correct, and c ne case was never
stolen or lost, as has been reported. But gee, whi/! fiftv
nine cases of that boiled down cussedness would make all
the jack rabbits iu the Southwest spit in the face of all the
bulldogs in the I nited States, so wliv worry about a mis-
case
