Arming the 3rd Texas Cavalry

Col. Elkanah Greer had specific orders from L.P.
Walker, Secretary of War of the Confederate
States of America: Raise and equip a regiment
of mounted men from the State of Texas. Vol-
unteers were easy; arming and equipping them
wasn't. Throughout East Texas that spring and
early summer of 1861, the young volunteers
flocked to the towns and cities to be enlisted
into companies by enrolling officers, usually
