—Looking more like a house fur
nace than a Buck Rogers rocket
ship the first piece of test equip
ment built specifically for outer-
space human research has be
delivered to the AF School of Avia
tion Medicine here.
The "sealed cabin" does not fly.
It was designed to investigate hu
man factors inside the cramped
quarters of a space ship far out
side the limits of the earth's at-
mostphere.
The cabin will give aeromedical
researchers here—headed by Dr.
Hans-Georg Clamann—most of the
sensations they would have on a
flight in space.
Hermetically sealed the cabin
will tell scientists what goes on
inside a space ship where a care
ful balance of atmospheric condi
tions must be artificially main
tained.
Conventional pressurized cabins
cannot be used above 80000 feet.
There is so little air at that
height that present-day compres
sors can't pump in enough to keep
passengers safe from altitude sick
nesses.
