THE ARMORED SENTINEL FORT HOOD TEXAS
Receives Help When Home Burns
What can a man do when his
homfe burns down and everything
in it—from his son's crib to his
favorite easy chair—is totally de
stroyed? Where can he go? To
whom can he turn for help?
Sp-5 Richard Lovell a track
and wheel mechanic for Co. D
124th Ordnance Battalion 2d Ar
mored Division was asking these
questions on Wednesday June 28
when he returned from guard
duty to find his duplex apart
ment at 1604 Park Avenue Kil
leen completely destroyed by fire.
Lovell's wife Maria and their 20-
month old son James were at a
drive-in movie with a neighbor
when the fire occurred.
Killeen Fire Chief Vernon V.
Rucker and his men arrived at
the scene at 9:27 p.m. and halted
the blazing inferno a half hour
later. Investigators haven't deter
mined the cause of the fire.
Specialist Lovell reported the in
cident to' his commanding officer
Lt. Henry X. Smith the follow
ing morning. Lt. Smith and 1st
Sgt. C. J. Justice realized that
something had to be done—and
fast.
"Sgt. Justice contacted people
in the battalion" Lt. Smith re
lated" and a fund was set up
for the Lovells*. A lot of peo
ple knew him and when they
heard about the fire they donated
freely. So far we've collected
$212.53 in the battalion alone.
"My wife helped also" Lt.
Smith continued" she and Mrs.
Paul Baden contacted Killeen
merchants who donated clothing
and appliances."
Total collection for the Lovells
is currently at $477.53 with more
donations expected. The 142d Sig
nal Battalion has contributed over
$100 and the 48th Medical Batta
lion has donated $87. The NCO

Tomato Crop
If your taste-buds are in the
mood for a delectable tomato
take a gander around Co. D 6th
Infantry CCA 1st Armored Di
vision you'll find many of them
"standing tall."
Thanks to M-Sgt. Pablo Cor
tes platoon sergeant of Co. D's
first platoon the 6th Infantry grew
the first tomato in its history
last week.
Early in the spring Sgt. Cortes
rounded-up a group of aspiring
soldiers within the platoon and
planted the seeds around their
barracks. Besides tomatos a va
riety of colorful flowers are now
in full bloom.
Following many hours of ferti
lizing and old standby mother nat
ure the coveted newborn tomato
made its six ounce debut in 6th
Infantry history June 27 and was
promptly presented to the unit
commander Lt. Barney D. Darby
by Sgt. Cortes.

Post Soldier Finds Some People Do Care
The owner of Hack's Army store
exemplified the sentiment of town
merchant when he said "'all I
contributed was some shirts and
socks but I was glad to help
those people out."
Mr. and Mrs. B. B. Renick
who live across the street from
the Lovfells at 1509 N. Park
opened their hearts to the home
less family and took them in.
"They are good friends" Mrs.
Renick explained. "When the
weather got warm they would al
ways sit on our lawn and talk to
my husband and me. Their little
baby is so cute ... we had an ex
tra room so we put them up from
Wednesday to Saturday when they
left for Harlington Texas. Mrs.
Lovell had a 14 day leave you
know ... I really didn't do much
just gave them breakfast and they
ate dinners at the home of Lt.
and Mrs. Smith."
What was Specialist Lovell's re
action to the donation of money
and clothing from the people of
his division and Killeen Mrs.
Renick was asked.
"Oh Specialist Lovell—he just
cried and said "The people are
being so wonderful!" "I told my
