The week under review has been a
quiet one in gesernl trs.'ls) circles
iQoogh up to the ordinary amount in
corresponding years of Into. Nor hii
resumption of specie payments had
any particular effect in one direction or
. the other so far.
The cotton market Las been a varia-
. bio one bat as a rule though prices
are still low the tendency has been an
improving one and the advance well
n:tuntained. Daring the early part of
the week the market fur cotton was
quiet but at times became somewhat
excited with wide fluctuations gener-
ally favoring sellers. Toward the end
prices were hardening and very full
figures' were obtained reaching S cents
in one Instance. We often advised
farmers to hold to their cotton if able
and we were right as the prices now
show and prices will go higher al-
though we look for fluctuations.
To-day Liverpool reports an active
and firm market at an advance of 1-16
5 7-10i for uplands and S 5-Sd for
Orleans. New York futures opened
'quiet at 9.53 for February while at
Galveston and New Orleans the mar-
kets were very firm. Our own market
showed considerable strength. A lot oi
43 bales classing strict good or Unary

nary 6 7-8 to 7c; good ordinary 7 1-8
to 7 1-4C; low middling 7 8-8 to 7 1-2;
middling 8s; good middling 8 l-2c.
For extra staple cotton 10c was paid.
The receipts at Austin are slightly
increasing and with better prices. We
look for larger shipments.
Shipments from Austin since
Beptember 1 1878 to Jan
nary 10 1879 bales
By International from Jan-
uary 11 to January 17 1879.
By Houston and Texas Cen-
Total bales to date 18149
Selected bides are very firm at 12 to
13c with large receipts.
Desirable samples of wool are very
readily taken and prices range from
10c for burry to 15 and k18c free of
The grain market shows a firmness
not anticipated by many. Wheat is
scarce at 75c corn bring. 70c and oats
35c with an advancing market.
Coffee is less firm and a decline of
l-2c on all grades is reported. Sugar
is quiet and steady.
Hog products are very low. Hams
are sold at 8 3 4c and clear sides at
Local financial affairs were very ac-
V.T last week. The counter transac-
tions of the banks were large with an
increasing busines. Money is in good
demand bat collaterals or names are
scrutinized and more ciution is used
in discounts. The many failures and
assignments ail ovei the State are very
discouraging and aQect the money
Treasury warrants continue firm at
97c to 93o where they can be used for
payments into the treasury.
Pension certificates continue to de-
cline; round lots sold at 75c smaller
ones brought less. We believe the
Legislature will make the necessary
appropriation for every kind of legal
indebtedness. As there seems to
be no doubt about the appropriation
for O. E. accounts the market is
firmer 81o to 82c being bid according
Oold silver and currency are at par
and circulating side by side. The
United States had on the first of
January about 1225000000 in coin in
the treasury against a greenback cir-
culation of $340000000. It may be
of interest to compare the condition
of the United States as to coin reserve
and paper obligations with the na-
tional banking institutions of Europe.
We find that the paper circulation of
Eagland France and Germany is only
a trine in excess of. tne specie reserve
land. We have computed the pound
tterUftgtt $3 United States currency.

Land certificates remain nominal.
We quote: Alternates $53 to 957.60;
Btraights f 199 to $197.50; Interna-
tionals $315 to $230 for 640 acres.
' Exchange is firm at 1-2 per cent on
all points East for selling 1-4 per cent
premium for buylug.

We have before ns the bill of costs
paid by a court not far away. One
Acgelo was charged with stealing fif-
teen cents' worth of orauts. The
trial occupied court and jury two and
a half days. For this vaia attempt to
convict a man of stealrg property
worth fifteen cents the poopic the
dear peop'e will pay as costs of suit:
Clerk $540; Attorney General $5;

mitted Angtlo) $3.73; constable $2;
jurors $34; boarding jury $30; jailor

that criminal prosecutions cost the tax-
