THE TEXAS STATE TEACHERS ASSOCIATION
Henry B. Caldwell Dire tor-Fort Worth Art Center. Mr. Caldw ll
is a graduate of both Harvard and New York University. He was
with the US Army Air Force from 1940 to 1945, was later with the
Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and s rvcd as A.ssistant Director of
the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., from 1950 to
1954. Mr. Caldwell assumed Dire:torship of the Fort Worth Art
Center in 1955. Under his leadership, many int:rcsting activities
are taking place in Fort Worth. A Rental Gallery at the Center
offers works of recognized local artists for r. nt at 10'r of their cost
for a three month period. Art classes were started, twelve cour es
now being offered. Monday evening programs for members include
concerts, lectures, artist demonstrations, old silent f:l!ns, art films,
and dramatic presentations. Interest and attendan e has growth
steadily. Monthly exhibitions attracted 56,000 visitors last year.
Among the exhibitions receiving national attention were 1955"s
Horse and Rider and 1958's The Iron Horse in Art. An added
feature this fall is the series of seven Friday morning lectures on the
domestic arts, given by authorities in seven different fields. During
Mr. Caldwell's time as Director, membership in the Fort Worth
Art Association has more than doubled. This is undobtedly a
tribute to the popularity and energy of Henry B. Caldwell.
