Tho conclusion of the railway com
tnlttee of the United .States senate not
to report any bills tills session is to bo
regretted if their decision etleets the
Texas Paclflo proposition of Mr. Hcolt
whloh the telegraph does not make
quite clear. Action postponed will
only serve to add strength to the claims
of the enterprise upon congress and
the country. By the time the uew
congress meets lu December next It
will again come before that body in a
way that will most probably secure Its
passage.
Meantime the company will ar-
range to build tho road to Fort Worth
complete the gap in the Transconti
nental and get the portion of the pro-
jected Hue between Khreveport and
Monroe in suoh a shape as to secure Its
completion as soon as possible. The
railway aud iron luteresta which ore
languishing from the depressive elleet
of the great panlo lost year will have
time to recuperate and when the Texas
and Pacltlo bill does puss everything
will be more propitious for pushing the
wor on rapidly. The delay of con
gress may retard but will not ultimate
ly prevent the completion of the greal
southern route. It Is Keiiernllv Hd-
mitted by the wisest publicist and po-
litical economists of the day that this
route lias now become one of the ne
cessities of commerce
As fur as Dallas and Texas are cou-
corned we have no apprehensions of
any serious drawback growing out of
meiion-oommencementofworkon this
road. Of course It would have been
greatly to our advantnge for the work
to have been resumed but the present

Whtiiisihit legitimate triuie or tliu

mands of tho community? If these
wants are less In extent In one year or
it series ot'yenrs than in another the
legit imate trudo Is Just so much liillu-
diced. It Is obvious therefore If Uio
depression of tho year can bo attribu-
ted to uo worse cause than a Judicious
economy there Is no great ground for
upiireheiislon. Ou the contrary the
only true path back to renewed activi-
ty anil a sal'u prosperity is In this di-
rection. U Is true that tho purchasing
power of the people in many localities
is Impaired by the condition of numer-
ous Industries now paralyzed from pre-
vious over-production. Time Is need-
ed lo restore these interests to their
normal condition uud we must wait
until tho equilibrium between supply
u nd demand for these products utljitsts
Itself if In the delay no greater calam-
ities occur than have been apparent in
the past year there will be cause for
congratulation.
JStill another hopeful sign is the
steadv ellort to at least largely reduce
indebtedness if not entirely to liqui-
date It. While among railroads and
largely expanded corporations this lias
been found next to Impossible wo are
pur.-maded that among merchants and
traders lite amount of current Indebt-
edness as compared with this time
hist year Is vastly decreased. SVe have
had abundant opportunity to note this
process of liquidation ami though It
bad very nearly reached Its minimum
prior to tho purchases for tho spring
trudo we are pursuadud there hos been
many a prosperous time in the history
of the country when the rcati.ntlo as-
sets of the mercantile community were
far less In proportion to the liabilities
than now.
