From a summary of the exports
and Imports of thu United States for
the last seven years the ilaltinioro
American deduces some very interest-
ing points in the mercantile experi-
ence of the country. Within this sev-
en years our exports exclusive of spe-
cie have nearly doubled and the bal
ance or trade instead of being over
$;lli0i)(io0() against uh as it stood in
1KUH-II is now less than $20000000. Du-
ring the llscal year ending June IStif)
our exports of domestic and foreign
goods amounted to 2Sli(il;lli."4 in gold
while our import for the name period
were H7fiS(i!)70. Last year ending
Juno .".0 our exports reached $313-
3KI(ilS while our imports were $f:i:i-
0(IO:i()!. Indeed during tho year 1S73
and 1874 which comprised the period
of the panic our exports exceeded the
imports by ne:trly ; 1001)0000 caused
chiolly by tlie largo demands for our
breadstulls In the Kuropeau markets.
Taking tlie seven years from June
ISliM to June 187.") wo find tho exports
to liiivo beeu $.)2;t774470 loss than the
imports milking an average annual
delieiency of $7 182402 1. During the
last two years the exports huvo nearly
equaled the imports. Our exports of
merchandise have increased eighty
per eeut. since J808-9 while the im-
port demand lias only advanced
twenty-eight per cent during the
same period. Our exports for 1H7H-4
are the highest on record amounting
to $Tv02.So040 against nM:lG18 lust
year.
Tho fulling off in the export trade
during the past year is ehielly notice-
atilo in breadstulls und cotton. Tlds
year we shall have better figures to
show in regard to grain while cotton
will not more than hold its own. Tho
specie exported last year amounted to
$02122142 while the Imports under
the same bead reached only $20804
217. The previous year the umouuts
were 3ti(ii)o0s()2 ami 284d4oou ro
specliveiy. During the soveu years
tlie specie Rent out of tho country was
Sv).'iui)ill) against lr)i:.rjoUa- Im-
ported ieavlng a balance ill our favor
of$!s;i!)04(li:j in tlie precious metals.
Willi liieso facts in view it is impossi
ble to avoid the conclusion that not-
withstanding tho depression of busi
ness and the general coin plaint of hard
times the country Is as regards Its ob
ligations uuroail lu a butter condition
llnanchilly than it has been since 1800.
We are paying our debts not always
a pleasant business but In the end sure
to be a wise and profitable one. lint
for our bonded indebtedness abroad
the balance of trado would he on mis
takably in favor of the United Slates.
