from Tvler to Pallas. I am asked by the
honorable Senator from Smith lo read
oyer the names of the petitioners froiii
the Marshall bar 1 think I know the
reason why this reiiiest is made and I
will now advert toil. I'liilei'stand that
(lie Hon. William Sleadinan whose
inline is signed to this pelition has re-
cently wrilten a letter to u gentleman
here recanting his former ad in issuing
and circulating this petition and in
that let ler asks the Senator from Har-
rison to go for Tyler. Inllueiices may
have been broughi to bear upon him by
the friends of Tyler that he could not
withstand. I know him to be a gentle-
man but he has at least changed once
on this subject and may change again
and it is doubtful whelln-r any one here
knows just how the honorable gentle-
men stands on the uubject to-day. These
pet it ions have a righl lo be heard. No
portion of the inhabitants is more
deeply interested in this ouestinn than
the lawyers; none so deeply interested.

necessity for a lawyer to attend the sit-
