PANHANDLE
PACKERIES
A S Stinnett Shows Amarillo's
Advantages and Points Out
Other Requisites
V. by Ainarlllo Is the place for big
packing Industries ami why such In-
dustries arc not beip now was taken
up In an aliie manner yesterday aft-
ernoon by A. S. Stinnett of Anui-
rl
representative o tho Nelson
Morris Tacking company. Mr. Stin-
nett rea as follows:
I wish to preface this paper with
a (jlsavowol Of any purposp to inflict
upon the farmer and livestock pro-
ducer that unsolicited and gratuitous
advice fco often and so freely given
by men of other and different pur-
suits and professions.
For the-last fifteen .vein's I have
been representative in one capacity
or another of some of t ho larger
packors and am at present aales
agent for u very considerable terri
tory of one of the largest and most
successful packing bouses of the
world nnd what 1 shall say will be
almost wholly within the donialu of
my observation aud experience.
A glance of the map giving you
the geographical location and tho
railway outlet and inlets together
with a cursory examination of the
complete adaptability of tho prevail-
ing crop and tho resultant rational
conclusion is that Amarlllo Is tho
Ideal location for a great packing; In-
dustry nnu that this great and need-
ful Industry will some day bo an ac-
tual entity right here In Amarlllo Is
Intliitivo and log'cal belief of every
one. Hut the question arising is
when cun and will this be? Shall it
bo at the f"d of a long period of
dragging evolutionary processes or
by a fixed plan of concentrated ac-
tion shall the requisite preparations
and readiness be made an actuality
within the reasonable period entirely
feaslgle and possible.
Has Trnnsoi'talioii Prerequisites
Homo of the more Important pre-
requisites are such as transportation
facilities freight rates contiguity of
markets geographical location and
raw material. The several trunk
lilies of railway as at present radiat-
ing In all directions from Amarlllo
guarantee ample distributing facili-
ties even if no more roads wore ever
to come a thing unbelievable and
this is too evident to Invito comment
of discussion. Afl to freight rales
there can bo no apprehension as the
federal government has been kept
busy In an effort to make railroads
charge higher rates on the product
of the packer. However the rail-
roads are always most liberal In fos-
tering Institutions which are of such
vital interest to them and the sec-
tions of country they traverse Con-
tiguity of market and geographical
location are important points in
which Amarlllo Is almost unrivalled.
At present Amarlllo has ono direct
railway ouilet to Oalveston and very
shortly will have another and the
rates from Ainarlllo to Oalveston
would ''ho practically the sumo as
from Port Worth to Galveston and
likewise ihe case to any other point
in Texas whos0 demand for packing
houso stuff la almost Installable
and furthermore with tho opening
of the Panama canal now not far
distant Amarlllo would bo on a parity-
with any prtmoji'v market in
reaching the market of all parts of
th0 world.
Amurillo now has one great trunk
line of railway reaching the Pacific
const and with the closing up of a
short gap now taking place and .
to be consummated will havo an-
other and such will give Amarlllo
striking advantages over any other
point and these advantages can
hardly ibe estimated owing to the
shorter and more reliable roiiloj -to
the greatest markets of the Pacific
coast states the Alnskan ad Asi-
atic trade as well as that of Old
Mexico. The present rival packing
centers for this trade are those of
Denver. Omaha St. Paul St. Joe
Kansas City nnd Port Worth.
Territory lteing- Peopled '
Another important feature bearing
directly on location and contiguity
of outlet Is tho great empire of terri-
tory now developing and peopling
with amazing and assured rapidity
and certainty consisting of North-
western' Oklahoma Tanhandlo of
Texas New Mexico and Arizona In
which there will soon he a popula-
tion taxing the capacity of one or
more large packing plants to supply
and more evident Is this when on
considers that with the a'dvpnt of
appearance of local or home slaugh-
tering wth (Is enforced disregard of
tho eeon.o.mK'' upon' which the suc-
cess and prosperity of h packing In-
duaUry rcMa.
YVe now come to tho question of
raw material than which any other
eminent or enscntlal entering; Into the
consideration could be restricted with
lesser Impalrniem of the possibility
of result to be achieved. With A inn.
lillo'a position us H ateway to great
mat'ketH present and future if the
question of raw material were set-
tled t-onio of the big packers would
cither be established or now pre-
paring to OHtablish In our m'.dst.
What wo refer to as raw material is
mainly fat cattle and desirable hngs
in lasting and certain abundance
and without plenty of both an af
fixed basis of an assured mainte-
nance of t.hld supply the futility of
the present agitation of the packing
industry would bp apparent to every
ono aside from arousing to action
nnd direction of ihat action to the
desired end.
Fort Worth Needed Hogs.
.lust here I become hrlely roml
nlscent. and call your attention to
the fact that some twenty years ago
a considerably packing plant was
erected l l'orl Worth a splendid
rallfoad center and gateway and
with varying degrees of noimuccess
this islant was operated for some
j years and was finally closed down
for lack of hogs. A fef years later
there was reorganization with re-
sumption of operation under new
management and It waa again found
that the hoc supply was Inadequate
as tho writer together with others
sold them every now aud then a car
or so of hqg products shipments from
the northern packing centers. Later
'on two of the big packers appeared
and constructed an Immense modern
plants believing their splendid equip-
ment and aggressive policy would re.
suit In the desired increaso in that
most Important Hem of raw material
hogs and notwithstanding the five
years that havo e'apd the fruition
of their hopes Is still deferred. At
present much of the hog product dis-
tributed from Kort Worth is uhlpped
to Port Worth olther green or cured
from northern plants and this has
not only curtailed dividends but act-
ed as deterrent lo other largo pack-
ers who 'have been w aiting for an op-
portune mom en to join tbo.inclplent
colony.
Again an educational campaign
had to be conducted alone tho line
of Inijps'ored beef. Texas had n
cattle in ample and unfailing supply
of th .various kinds preponderating
to the canning variety without the
canneries which have since or soon
will bo provided. The situation as
to beef looks well in hand and the
problems yet ahead for solution pre-
veut no serious difficulty. The sud-
den springing up languishing and
death of packing houses In the South-
west has engendered conservatism
and caused a closer scrutiny of pos-
sibilities than ever before and this
is as it nhould be as success and per-
manency are desired by all.
Need flaw Materials.
A packing plant having Ihj equip-
ment and magnitude to compete In-
volves an outlay of about 1 1.000000
w ith as much more as operating cap-
ital and with this investment there
can bo no question as to supply of
raw material. A sporadic supply
would mean sporadic operation with
disastrous results. One of the large
packers realizing th advantage of
Amarlllo as wholesale and distribut-
ing center has already purchased
ground upon which to hulld a cold-
storage warehouse and curing room
to which they will ship raw dressed
material and cured products for
proper handling ani quick distribu-
tion and no doubt they have In mind
other greater possibilities later on.
From lhe foregoing It In. clearly seen
that all tho prerequisites arc now
provided aside from raw material
and with which the rest will be easy
and certain. Slock farming Is tho
admitted solution with an organized
start at once and a fixed purpose
ahead In two or three years time
there would bo cattle and hogs lack-
ing neither in ahundanco nor quality
followed Instantly by two or more of
the great packers. No section of
any country ever had before it more
alluring opportunities and prospects
than ihe great Panhandle of Texas
as it is now known to th most be-
nighted minds that Id variety qual-
ity' and quantity of grain production
alfalfa forage and hay growth the
Texas Panbaudlo is without a supe-
rior in all th0 proven zone of agri-
culture and no one rn xalnsay that
cattle and hngs In the Panhandle for
health growth and thrift stand on
a full level with the chonen Of the
earth. The evolution and onward
rush ai now at hand. The one time
exclusive farmer on one side and the
one time short grass cattleman on
tho other can now 'be seen with
bands locked across the chasm that
once divided them and us issuing
therefrom can already bo discerned
the ripe fruitage of millions 0f lllled
acres with unnumbered homes and
ever growing nnd expanding villages
and cities and all things else that
could and. would spring from such
boundless sourco of wealth and
thenceforth wltn every denizen of the
plains man. woman or child tho
shlholeth should and shall be wo
will make of the Panhandle of Texas
both the granary an( the smoke-
hoiisp of the world.
