Bong Raises Bag

ALLIED HEADQUARTERS, I
Leyte — (UP) — America's lead-1
ing air ace — Major Richard
Bent, of Poplar, Wis. — has shot |
down two more Jap planes, rais- !
ing his total bag to ;58.
Bong scored his latest victories '
in air battles yesterday against
Japanese planes protecting a con-
voy west of Leyte and other
enemy aircraft attacking Amer-
ican naval forces in Ormoc Bay.
Even as the Wisconsin ace
was getting his two new kills, it
was announced in Washington
that he has been awarded the
Congressional Medal of Honor.
The award went to him because
he has voluntarily engaged in
I combat although his present as-
signment as a gunnery officer
! does not require it. Major Bong
has shot down 10 planes while
supposedly on non-combat duty.

Hoffman Calls For Record Expansion Of
3oods And Services As Only Way To
Provide 53,000X00 War Jobs
CHURCHILL-
CHICAGO — (UP) — Stude-
haker President Paul Hoffman
says a record expansion in the
output of goods and services ov-
er 1940 levels is the only sound
way to provide a required
000,000 post-war jobs.
Hoffman asserts that a gross
output of from 155,000,0(H),000 *n
170,000,000,0C0 must be achieved
in the immediate post-war era in
older to prevent mass unem-
ployment and chaos.
The automotive executive com
denined the so-called "realistic"
attitude which has suggested

more plausible si 20,000,000.000
aim in an address last night be-
fore the Champion Farmers of
America.
"1 don't think ii is realistic,"
;•> - Hoffman, "to take a goal
which would involve us in t'el-

"Not do I think it realistic." he
adds, ."to give heed to a gospel
