Seized Liquor Is
Piling Up—Some
Bottles 'Plugged'
Sweetwater's sheriff officers
have quite a supply of liquor to
be forwarded to the state liquor
board. The "liquor vault'' at the
local sheriff's office is virtually
packed with the liquid forbid-
den in this county.
Recent possession of liquor
arrests have almost filled the
closet from too to bottom.
However, state prosecutors
mav find it hard to convict
some offenders of selling liquor.
For some of the bottles marked
whiskey that have been taken !
by the sheriff officials are ' plug-
ged." i
It ail points to the fact that f
people who have been "pur- j
chasing" liquor unlawfully here 1
may not be getting genuine
whiskey.
At least six bottles found by J
local officers were plugged at ;
the bottom and remarkably : e-1
sealed where the average per-
son would not notice the pro-
cess. This is ,i heavy offense
and is being investigated, it is
reported.
So it might not be liquor some j
have been drinking after all. It i
might be another form of "liq-1

Harvester Branch
Here Wins Unusual
Sales Recognition
The local branch of the Inter-
national Harvester Company re-
ceived the Peter V. Moulder
Trophy in recognition of the ac-
complishments of the organiza-
tion in a National Sales Contest.
B. M. Kaiser, regional motor
truck manager, flew down from
Chicago to make the presenta-
tion to R. S. Biggerstaff, district
manager, in a special meeting
held Monday morning at the
plant.
Each member of the Sweetwa-
ter District organization receiv-
ed an individual golden replica
of the trophy to wear in his lapel.
Sweetwater not only placed
first in its respective division,
but also placed first in the
United States.
The local branch area serves
practically all of West Texas.
Paving Program Is
Due For Completion
Within Two Months
The job of ripping up some
1,700 feet of condemned curb-
and-gutter on Woodrutf Latin
and Bristol Drive has been com-
pleted, according to City Engi-
neer Dan Shipley, and laying of
new curb-and-gutter in its place
was to lie started this week.
With replacement of this
curb-and-gutter underway and
with laying of the base in pro-
gress (right now the base-lay-
ing crew is working on Arkan-
sas Street), Sweetwater's cur-
rent paving project is within
less than two months of being
completed, Shipley estimates.
It will, he believes, require
about :)() days for the base-lay-
ing to be finished, and then an
additional 20 days will be re-
quired for the topping.
Approximately To blocks of
paving will have been added to
the city's paved street system
when tne project is finished.
The condemned curb- and-gut-
ter was among the first laid by
the original contractor. Tell
Smith Construction company,
some Hi-US months ago. City
Engineer Shipley tentatively
condemned the construction at
the time, but consented to give
the company a chance to re-
pair it.
Removal of the faulty con-
struction was decided on re-
cently by Shipley and the .1. R.
Fanning Asphalt Company,
which now has the paving con-
tract.
No addition;
or the property
suit from the
cost to the city
owners will re-
condemnation,
Shipley said, since such loss i>
covered by the bonding com
puny.
I- inal curb-and-gutter,
titan that in the repla<
area, was being laid at
week on l.urch betweei
