What is ACU?
ACU is a residential university where students have an opportunity to
meet others with similar interests and goals and to develop life-long
friendships. Ideally, they learn to be sensitive to the needs of others
and at the same time feel a sense of personal dignity and worth. They
learn to value excellence, integrity, self-reliance, truth, love, beauty,
health, and goodness. Students are encouraged to learn to listen,
observe, inquire, synthesize, evaluate, think logically and creatively,
calculate, analyze, organize, read critically and widely, and write and
speak effectively. Conscientious students come to understand their
culture as seen in history, philosophy, literature, the arts, language,
human behavior and science; and they learn to cope by using the
concepts of the social and natural sciences and the humanities.
Students at ACU may also prepare themselves for personally
satisfying careers. Graduates of Abilene Christian University hold
positions of leadership and service throughout the world. Employers
prize them not only for their academic and professional competence,
but also for their commitment, integrity, and high moral standards.
The university is a private non-profit institution without access to
public financing. However, because of endowment and gifts from
alumni and other interested individuals and foundations, students
are charged less than half the actual cost of their education. Many
students also qualify for various forms of financial aid, scholarships,
grants, loans, and work opportunities.
Scope of Service
Abilene Christian University serves a broad spectrum of students.
To help challenge students, there is a comprehensive Honors
Program as well as special programs in the Learning Enhancement
Center (LEC) for those wanting to excel in certain areas. For the
under prepared, there are programs serviced by a well-equipped
LEC, as well as an Academic Advance Program. The university
maintains an environment on campus and in classrooms and
residence halls that encourages learning, personal development,
physical well-being, and growth in Christian character. This, of
course, includes recreation and entertainment as well as
opportunities for church and community service, but students areexpected to balance extracurricular and academic activities.
Although the principal concern of the university is excellence in
instruction, ACU encourages significant research, creative
production, publication, and other scholarly activities by its faculty
and students. Special attention is given to providing library
materials, computer facilities, laboratories, and learning aids and
materials. The library is the knowledge center of the campus.

Abilene Christian University provides a year-round educational
program. In addition to the fall and spring semesters, there are
interim terms in January and Maymester and two summer terms
offering courses ranging in length from two and a half to five weeks.
Some graduate courses are offered in a shorter format with pre- and
post-assignments. These sessions afford a wide range of classes at
undergraduate and graduate levels, including many classes which
meet University and Degree Core requirements for bachelor's
degrees. Many Junior Scholars take advantage of summer school
opportunities for academic advancement between their junior and
senior years of high school.
The emphasis during summer school is on flexibility and innovation.
Many special workshops, seminars, and short courses are offered.
Opportunities for combining study and travel (such as to Mexico,
Europe, Asia, Africa, Central and South America, and the Bible
lands) are available. Summer schedules and additional information
may be obtained by writing or calling the director of that program.
