Had tbe leciilature acted unwisely and
pwted law calculated to hamper the rail-
rosds building tor tbe present wouid have

fier cent of the capital now being expended
n the construction of railways in this state
ii foreign or in other words from other
itatei principally the east where there is
now and has for some time'been a plethora
of capital. This capital is seeking invest
ment eou at presum xexas ouurs the great

in building the roads will find its way into

buiiness good and money plentiful. The

The Henrietta Shield is in favor of ridding
the country of quack doctors and says :
The stato association fails in one crand
psrticular. It is supposed to be made up of
us utst puyeiumus iu me state men wbo
know their duty and perform it Then why
do they not take some action that will force
the legislature to make a law relioving the
country of quacks? More than half of the
deaths that occur are directly caused by tbe
ignorance of men who foist themselves upon
tbe community as doctors when in fact
they know no more about medicine than
ten-year-old boy.
Of the change in officers of the Texas
PaciQo ritilroad the Weatherford Times re-
marks :
tt is with more than ordinary pleasure
that we announce the election of Mr. Jay
Gould to the presidency of tbe great Texas
& Paciflo railway. Tho election of Mr.
Gould promises a complete lioe to tin Pa-
cilio through Weatherford and a genoral
improvement of localities presenting the
greatest natural advantages for the road's
service the company's benefit and tho en-
richment of the country.
The editor of the Palostine News in writ-
ing on the subjoat of free schools their ad-
vantages to the public etc. manages to
intertwine tho following sensible romarks
concerning the press;
The newspaper speaks from the highest
pulpit on earth and should be the best
edueutur of public morals extant. Its field
of usefulness cannot be measured by time or
distance. In printing a thought it travels
into the minds of innocent children within
the sanctuary of many homes. Its power
may be for good or evil. How important it
is then that the conductor of a newspapor
should rightly understand the science of hu-
man nature and bring to bis work a reverent
spirit and a constant care. The far-
reaching voice of the press should be potont
everywhere in making human life better and
purer. Tbere ought to be more reliance and
less subtertuge more honor and less cow-
ardice than is practiced by the newspaper
of tbe period.
Both Dr. Clopton of Jefferson and Dr.
Eaden of Galveston have declined the
superintendency of the luoatio asylum and
the governor is still looking after some one
brave enough to take the place. The 'Waco
Telephone says :
Tbe place one that many first-class
plysicians could well afford to accept but
when Or. Saunders resigned it he established
a precedent that most of the doctors will
shrink from violating because of the dreaded
criticisms of their fellow-doctors. If Dr.
Saunders is determined to vacate the place
thore is a fine opening there for a competent
doctor with some moral courage who feels
that ho needs that $2000 and is not ashamed
to own his necessity.
The Houston Post In speaking of the
disparity in the encouragement of home
talent in the north and south says : '
It is high time that the south and particu-
larly Texas should throw off their leading
strings and go alono. We have individuality
and even high culture in our midst but no
concert of action in matters outside of poli-
tics and business affairs. Even in the latter
the centrifugal force Is sa great that plain
enterprises guaranteeing benefit to the city
and state and profit tn individuals are suf-
fered to lie unimproved. Each one has his
hands and his head full of bis own concerns
and although often marked by traits ot per-
sonal liberality is educated in a selfish schuol
as to common Interests and publio affairs.
It is hire that we are surpassed by the north-
ern communities. Whether from a greater
population a hotter education or some more
subtle Instinct of association they bold to-
gether more than we do By some clever
faculty they manage without disparagement
to their private concerns to find time to
consult with oaeh other on interesting and
important topics of genoral interest; each one
lays a nana or a uoger on the common work
and lo it is done. Hence libraries abound
In the cities and lycouma are fostored. liter
ature is cherished practically. Men of talent
unable to get on their legs are helrcd to
stand. Modest merit li enrni!-Hilj and
every effort made of a h-- iv.nt or lm-
iroving character whether in iclulogy art
otters or science is warmly and substantially
aided to exerciso itself for good.
The Ualveaton News thinks the destiny
of Mexico hingos on the railroad question
and says:
As far as navigation is concerned Moxlco
is almost liverloss. Under Spanish domin-
ion the want of riven was in some sort
compensated by skillfully constructed land
highways. But tbe art of road building
loomed to desert the country with tbe
expulsion of the Spanish rulers. The subse-
quent prevalence of volcanic nolitlca in
Mexico was peculiarly unfavorable to tbe
return domestication and syitomatio devel-
opment of tbe art. A fter the era of railroads
sot tn about fiftv vaara ton. Merlon was
bound to keep pace with the balanoe of the
civiuzea world in the establishment and
difiuiion of railroad facilities or occupy a
low position on the icale of general progress.
