Hon. It. J). Tarloton at the first clay's as-

Hend with the report of tho celebration
unlilislii'il vestonlav morniiiL':
I havo a ease to nut before yon: If to
vour homo should eouio one who had
given to you Hie supremo and ultimate
test of friendship -who for you hud
braved dangers manifold and varied
diHOiiseund death inall their lorms how
would you treat tho guest? How
warmly would you not grasp
him liv tile hand? How your
heart would go out to him this friend
who had ralilied or proll'crecl to ratify
Ins friendship for you his fidelity to
you will) the great high and lolly seal
ol his best heurt's blood. In this alti-
tude toward you. I Confederate soldiers
of 1'arson's lirtunde stand for tho most
part for the men women and ehildron ol
this fair eounly of Hill and of this young
ritv of llillsb'oro in whose name I bid
you welcome thrice welcome in their
'midst. llolievo inn that Hie greeting in
warmth is commensurate with tho grati-
tude which they feel and the debt which
they owe to you. You ami
each of you wlio in the
dark and dreary days followed
with fealty tho banner ol tho "Lost
Cause" licit banner which went down
in disaster which lives alone In history
it Is true hut which will live there as
long as history slmll tell of deeds of
valor done as long as pouts can sing and
sages write of martial glory. You and
ach of vmi have given to the men
women and children ol this lair land
the supreme and ultimate lest of your
friendship. Cor them you have braved
dangers manifold and varied; for them
perhaps you havo sull'ered the
pangs of slow and languishing disease:
vnu have found on an hundred battlc-
"liolds death in all its horror and ils
griinnoss; you havo endured perhaps
tho gloom and darkness of (he prison;
youliiive ratified or proll'ered to ratify
to your lidelily to them with tho high
anil lofty seal of your best heart's blood.
In tho spirit then of such a host to such
a guest they extend to you Hie hand of
friendly greeting. They bid you web
come thrice welcome in their midst.
In these bright days of peace in tills
fair land of plenty and prosperity you
are eouio to renew for a day the associa-
tions ol a rin;ged and a trying past. It
is u beautiful custom it is all Hie more
beautiful because it is exclusively a fea-
ture of these latter limes and of Hie
duvs that havo sin eceded the lato war.
.History does nol record the reunion of
Knglish or of French veterans after
the great Duropcau wars to exchange
tho greetings ol friendships for... .
to renew the associations had n military
days gone by. It was left (o tliu .vou.ii-

suggest and adopt this comely practice
ol meeting year liy year ami ro-eiiKnnl-ling
those 'strong attachments which
sprung from tho hitter experiences of

It was not mine to incur these dan

tho morn's reveille. I sat not around

anticipation of tho morrow. The
gleaming of tho bayonet ; the Hashes of
the saliro; the neighing of the war steed ;
the sharp rattle of llio musketry; the
loud eiiitb-ipiakiiig boom of the can-
nonade: tho agony of the wounded; Hie
moan of the dying comrade; Hie death
grapple with the relentless toe; the
weariness and privation of the prison
all these were unknown tome Hut to
you they were laiiiiluir and it is indeed
it comely spectacle to see the soldiers of
Isiil meet as Hioeili.ens of lss ami re-

they came from tlio State on whose soil

which issued tho lirstilelilierate resolves

what an army they formed these gal
lant men! History tells us ol tho Mace-

penetrable; history tells us of the Un
man legion it was not more impetuous
history tells us of the Hussion soldier
lie was not more enduring; history tells
usol the Cossack he was not more agin
history tells us of the british grenadier.
ho wis not more stubborn; history tells
us ol .Napoleon s did liuard u was not
braver than tint southern soldiery.
And the leaders of this army us a whoh
have perhaps been iiiieiiualed in history
oof merely as to military skill but in
purity and excellence ol character
will not be invidious to dwell for
momma upon two of our illustrious
dead. l''or a brief period the Confed
crate arinv was blessed with the iin
euce of ouo ol' the most rmiiaikabl
iik-ii whom modern times has pro-
duced lie seemed born for tb" mo-
mentous crisis. Ho became a
general as it were by an
instinct lie sprang from llio profes-
sor's chair into the arena of conlliel
a fiill-foniicd hero. Intensely earliest
he inspired among bis troops an irre-
sistible enthusiasm. I'Ueiiy unselfish
ho awakened among his compeers not
jealousy but love and generous emula
tion. .Never doubling always conn-

was a tower of strength. Children
lisped it; men exulted in if. The chilli-
ness of ago was warmed into ardor at ils
mention. I.ven reluctant l.iirotio yielded
to its homage. While history shall be
written or lioertv honored or loity
deeds be approved or purity bo appre-
ciated or Christian heroism' bo venera
ted the name of Stonewall Jackson
shall bo cherished by the Southern peo
ple as the ancients cherished their
household gods. Hut there was another
oven grealer than Jackson. He was u
man without tho salient points ol .lacii-
son Ills character being rounded full-
orbed liko tlio sun. "In him were
united qualities seemingly incompati-
ble in the same person. The bravery of
Caesar the caution of Cabins the im
petiiosily of Napoleon the steadiness ( f
Wolling'lon the integrity of Cato Hie
chastity of Scipio the purity of Wash-
ington ami Hie tenderness of woman."
It was doubtful whether this hero was
greater In victory than in defeat. After
inn II 1 1 ii I reverse lus acceptance ol the
inevitable was sublime. Who shall say
whether he was more illustrious at the
head of his college class or at the head i f
a victorious army in Hie combination
of the elements of grandeur ho is alone
in history. Washington might have been
his peer but the grand opportunity was
wauling. It is hardly necessary to say
that 1 refer to Itobcii K. Lee.
Hut my friends there is one of whom
history by name is silent and song sings
not and vet Ho merits no smaller meed
of praise than Lee or Jackson. His was
no ancestral name ins were no nroau
acres no proud mansion. No liveried
servants answered at. his beck and call.
Ills habitation was simple and his none
bumble. He dwelt in honest povertv.
When he heard the cry of war in
his native laud he fell the instinct
of country swell as high in his
bosom as did he of lordliest name
or archest inheritance. And so he bade
a last adieu lo wife and children and to
sacred home and went forth lo battle
expecting no reward save that of the
consciousness of duty done. Ah what
a hero this Confederate private soldier!
See his grave over yonder and doll your
