MARY HAD A LITTLE SHOP
"Mary opened a little shop
To help her on life's way;
And honest toil found fit reward
And it began to pay.
''How's biz?" the landlord often
And Mary was imprudent;
Of course she never guessed he was
An economic student.
But Marv's landlord's eagle eye
Was watching how things wei
And when the 15th May came
He doubled Mary's rent.
1 he imposition staggered her
But what could Mary do?
Subsistence bare is the tenant's
All above is the landlord's due
So Mary kept on as before
Improving as time went;
But step by step with increased
The landlord raised the rent.
And thus the merry game went on
Till Mary's life was spent---
As fast as God could prosper her
The landlord raised the rent."
Preacher man get your piety busy;
Your home look through and through
Then take the means sure rot to have
Yourself some Marys too.
A" Sermon for the Times" in this issue was delivered years
ago but being as fresh a love message as ever it ought to arresi
interest with the assembled christians. It has been printed in
many papers between the great lakes and the gulf and scattered
in leaflets even in Europe and Australia. The author is a mem-
ber of this conference. If the- reverend gentleman is preaching
heresy then heresy is spreading the world over and this minister
should be brought to account and the seal of condemnation fixed
upon him. But if on the contrary he is orthodox and promoting
"Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven" then in all
righteousness should not the seal be "commendation" instead of
Anyhow brethren a hearty hand grasp and warm "God
speed you" would brighten his care-dimmed eyes would touch
up his loving heart and withal stiffen his already strong backbone.
There's yet much in Henson's sallow shrunken covering that
a little encouragement would bring out things that the church
and country are starving for.
What hope of harvest in the profuse sowing of single tax
tracts? About the same a$ in other crops. To reap at all we
are obliged to sow trusting in God for all harvests.
Is there any preacher who thinks "all that is worth know-
ing" is embodied in his church curriculum?
BAILEYISM AND THE CHURCH
The Texas Christian Advocate stood editorially favorable
to Bailey and to that extent Baileyism.
The Polytechnic College allowed Bailey to address its
students and to that extent endorsed Baileyism.
These are institutions of Methodism and the presumption
will prevail that the church is committed to Baileyism unless the
conference expresses disapproval of the work of its agents.
WHAT WILL THE CONFERENCE DO?
Homeseekers? Well yes; our conference guests will find
more homeseekers in Amarillo probably than they are used to.
The reason is when they seek here they find and so plentiful are
the findings and so rapidly do they enhance in value that the
seeker is soon able to seek a roll-top desk and go to professional
seeking for other home seekers; and when the other homeseekers
are seeked then they in turn find a soft place on the curbstone
and proceed to seek the other seekers. ' Yes lots of rnme seek-
ers here endless chain a regular merry-go-round liable to
catch a preacher homeseeker may be too!
What God has hyphenated no man can put asunder.
The clearest thinkers in Amarillo are single taxers. How is
it in your community?
Keeping in mind the father of this bantling you can easily
account for its imperfections.
Preserve this souvenir if only to controvert its single tax
arguments when you get time.
There are no great men nor great papers opposing the single
tax or they do not come into the open.
Mail this little paper to your wife at home so she may know
what happened to you in the white settlements.
When a vote on single tax is taken in Texas good bye
Land Monopoly. Better get onto the band wagon.
Things go by majority vote in this country. When the six
renters in Texas to the one landlord are told that the ground they
are working is rightfully their own free as the air and sunshine
won't there be something doing?
Why was not time taken to polish up and make a more
decent souvenir for the conference folks? Why what time was
taken was stolen from the living just as others are driven to
stealing and lying by land monopoly.
Everybody believes the earth is a common inheritance.
That's single tax. Everybody thinks it ought to b. restored to
the people. That is single tax. Some of them are doing noth-
ing to restore it. That is not single tax.
Churches won't' fight till they are cornered. They didn't
in the freeing of the niggers but getting cornered they fought like
mad and slavery went. Brother preachers we are going to have
you leading in the fight for the land for the people if we have
to conscript you.
When you read the article in another column headed "The Modem
Joshua" you will have read the first one openly upholding the George theory
ever appearing tn print in Texas. It was in the Texas Christian Advocate in
1886. The only answer to it was "If Brother Caldwell wants universal free
land why don't he begin by giving away out of his own many ferti'e acres?"
Bro. C. couldn't see the point but George's soul is marching on all the same.
The land speculator purely by accident read : "Seek ye
first the kingdom of heaven and all these things shall be added'
etc. He forthwith bought a ticket to Amari'lo. The "added"
was forthcoming sure enDUgh and and the women and
children are now dodging his automobile. Moreover he has
become a pillar in the church and and thinks labor wages
