fitted them to keep their steady way regardless.
At last came the day when they had no money
and no bread. Half-satisfied with a scanty
breakfast the girls crossed the street to the College
and Miss Moore watched them from her
couch in the window with a heavy heart.
Was the time not yet ripe for her venture?
Must she let these twelve go back to their
homes unsatisfied;-these poor ones who had
come together at her call, relying upon her and
her God? 0, how her heart clung to these girls,
and as she thought she wept. How could she
let them starve? and yet, if they were sent
away would it not be to starve their hopes, their
minds, and their immortal souls?
And as she wept her eyes fell upon her jewel
box beside her. She had called for it an hour
before to put away a costly ring she could no
longer wear on her thin finger. She brushed
the tears from her eyes to gaze again at the
beautiful treasures it contained. There were
rich gifts from honored members of society;
there were family relics of by-gone generations;
there were medals gained in school days from
colleges and societies; there were keep-sake
gems from foreign lands; there were love
tokens of her childhood smiling at her from
ruby and emerald, pearl and sapphire eyes;
there were costly diamonds; but rarer still there
were jewels that had been worn on hands that
would never clasp hers again until they touched
in the rapture of heaven, gems that had been
worn against white bosoms that would press
