A few days ao a white man by
tbonamoof Atcbison otilill county
had cut a froednuin sovcrely with a
kui.fo. Atchison was admitted to
bail rn tho firm of 2000 which up
to tho present time Atcbison has
tailed to avail liimsclt ot altnough
having tried to furnish bondsmen.
It seems that Atchison was on a
spree and had been drinking freely
was regarded as troublesome and
consequently bad been avoided by
so mo persons. JIo continued bis
drunken cruise around town until a
late hour on Tuesday niicht. About
11 o'clock on that night he entered
ti houso near tho Waco House where
two or more iVcodmen wero 0110 of
whom was playing on a violin. At-
chison' took the instrument from
tho player and' mado a demonstra-
tion accompanied with a threat to
smash it and asked the freecltnan if
ho wasn't afraid of a Ku Klux.
What answer ho received wo know
not but it is proven so far that
Atchison then and thcro cut ono of
said f'reodmen across tho abdomen
with a pocket knife and that the
negro now lies in all probability
beyond recovery. Tbcseare in sub-
Bttinco the facts that havo been
brought to light so far. Tho court
houso was full during tho trial the
greater number of those in lU tend-
ance being frcedmen who were
orderly and giving earnest attention
to tho proceedings. When the de-
cision1 of tho court was announced
it was apparent tkat the freedmen
wero not satisffed. They thought
that tho case was not a bailable one
and after maintaining a moody and
sullen silence they broke out into
unmistakable expressions of their
settled dissatisfaction. In knots
and crowds they bung about tho
square canvassing with each other
and at limes with respectable citi-
zens as to them appearing the par-
'tiality evinced towards the white
man 111 this matter and it was fre-
quently said by them that if tho
case was tho reverse that the negro

came on and with it indications of

not known to us was allowed to re-

Vel such are lite pngeanti which Ilia Im-
partial ma la gilding with golden glory In
fanatical- New Englaud to day. Of tuck
degrading deitcrationrof a day saortd to
very truly American heart we ar proud
that real Southern men and women from
tbe ralapscolo the Rio Grand are passive
or disgusted spectator! holding themselves
with oativ dignity aloof. Vet lo the
Southern tout there is reverence for Ihe
natal day of American freedom. Few are
there of Ike South' children who will not
to day call from tha arcane of fancy vivid
pictures of the long struggle of the Revo-
lution of its sorrows and its joys of Ihe
troops crossing with bleeding fcot Ihe
frozen waters of the Pelawaro and Ihe
women spreading flowers on the bridge
beneath the feet of Virginia's most illus-
trious son when that conqueror having
achieved bis country's independence was
marching Into Trenton. The dfty and its
associations are not the exclusive property
of any single section of our common coun-
try they belong alike toevery true Amer-
ican. Let us hope that in November next
the people will rise In the majesty of their
might and drive away from Ihe capitol the
reckless Nerocs who have applied the torch
to tho Temple of Liberty andare gambling
for tbe spoils of office by the light of its
conflagration; after which the Southern
people may return lo the observation of
tho national holiduy without a compromise
of decency dignity or self-respect and
"lift the piran
From the teoipla to the sky
Grand at the wluulinrp million
When itornia are owneriing hy."
But now so far as tho South is concerned
the day once bright with smiles and vocal
with the sweet voice of gladnoss must pass
in silence and the smile of the South is
but the bright reflection of a tear. Pis-
mantled and bleeding she is the '-Niobe of
nations" now; and until llio future shall
relieve her from her ghoul-like tormentors
the anniversary of American Independence
must be a holiday in thought alone and
the tomb of Washington a "Mecca of the
mind.''
Jgylho railroad bridge conneoting Ihe
mainland with Galveston Island has been
completed and Ike first train passed over
it on the 24th nit. The reporters of the
city papers of Galvestuu aud Houston were
invited to avail themselves of the trip and
of course tbey assembled in foroe -who
ever heard of editors or reporters- missing
a good think like that? As the train pass-
ed over the bridge Capt. Boyoe the Con
tractor brought out a couple of baskets of
champagne "into which" says the News
reporter "all hands pitched and in turn
were Ditched into by the contents" of
course they did ; who would'ntl We are.
right here reminded of a very pleasant
little excursion en the same road in which
we participated some 18 months ago when
champagne a cold lunch and roasted oys-
ters were prevalent.
Th bridge has already cost about $67-
000 and will probobly run up to $75000
before it is entirely finished.
The traveling community will rejoice at
the completion of this Work. The News
winds up its account of the affair as fol-
lows: At seven o'clock tho passenger
train came over bringing back tho
guests and reached the city at
nightfall. All appeared to realize
and rejoice over tho fact that Gal-
veston had made a mainland con-
nection again and had gotten rid
of tbe passenger steamboat Flcta
which was loft lyin at the draw-
bridge waiting to get through look-
ing like tho last rose of summer
left out in the cold the solo prop-
erty of ex-Governor Wells of Lou-
isiana; but wo must praise her aa
we would any other bridge after
carrying us safely over.

BoP We publish on l!t oulaideof to-day's
paper an nrtlcl couiniiiiiicaicd to the
YYaxnliachie Argus from VY. I). Dillon
L'.. a practical aud cxperiinctd farmer
of Ellis couuly on the failure of the wheel
crops for Ihe past three years end suggest
ing some remedy. It is iiihjvot in which
our farming community at so deeply and
vitally interested that we feel onstrsined
to publish everyibing In referenceto It that
seems lo us lo offer the slightest chano of
a return to our former heavy erops and
heavy grain and we commrnd lbs sugges
tions mad by Mr. Dillon to every reador
of Ihe Herald. Hi Idea of uuder-draln-
age is no doubl n valuablo hint and par-
tioularly do we commend our farmers to
DtW deep and plant early. But to this we
would add that lo improve the seed and
increase theyicld we believe the suggestions
made by us sevoral weeks ago are equally
as important if not more so vis: be care
ful in selecting your seed wheat don't let
a single imperfect or shrivelled grain go
into the ground if you can avoid it. With
these precautions we firmly believe we
can not only return to our former yields of
26 to SO bushels to the acre but enn make
the grain produced largely superior to for
mer yields. We havo seen wheat raised
within four miles of this place that weighed
68 to 70 lbs to tha bushel and there is no
reason why with careful culture and av
erage fair seasons tbe same or better re-
sults cannot bo attained. Experience
teaches that the earliest fall wheat is the
best for this climate and we are of opinion
that the present Bccd improved as above
stated is the best Hint can be attained.
Another suggestion made by a practical
farmer of this county and which wo heart-
ily indorse is to put the seed in with drills
Wo have conversed with several of our
best farmers on this subjecl and they all
approve of the plan. Then we say to our
farming community : first prepare your
ground well; second get good full and
perfect seed and sow in drills as early in
the fall as possible; after eecding roll your
ground well and repeat the operation
once in tuid-wiuter and again in early
spring. With this attention and an aver-
age season we do not fear for our next
wheat orop. One of our best farmers
staled to us a few days ago that he was as
well satisfied with our country as a wheat
country to-day as he ever was; and that he
anticipated a yield' next season as great as
if not greater than in proportion to the
quantity sown we have ever had.
Read the communication of Mr. Dillon
and acton Lis suggestions; we believe them
to be eminently good. Science applied to
agrioulture has proved abundantly to be
valuable and the farmer who docs not ap-
ply all his energy and all the new lights
brought before him is reoroant to himself
as well as to our beautiful and fruitful
lands.
Improved Pobtble Cotton and Hat
Press. We saw at Waxahaehie a few days
ago the model of one of the most valuable
improvements iu farming machinery that
we have ever seen. It is an improved Cot-
ton and nay Press Invented by J. Berke-
ley of Washington Texas and perfeoted
by F. II. Keitb of TVaxabachie. Ur. K.
showed and explained to us the working of
the Press which for simplicity durability
and perfect adaptation of all its parts to
the work intended is certainly superior to
anything of tbe kind we ever saw. It is
built of light material at scarce half the
eost of Ihe common country cotton press
is portable and can be taken from farm to
frm on any common two horse read wagon
wheels and can be got ready for work in
five minutes. It possesses almost unlimi-
ted power and so perfect and friction-free
are us movements tbat a maa average
strengik is sufficient to make a live hun-
dred pound bale and ane good mule or
