Last winter a Mr. J. N. Kskridgo was
known as one of the largest buyers of
cotton in this city llissquabbles in iiis

ness were not so numerous as terrilllc
when they did break out. This soon
wou for him the unpaeifie yet express-
ive title of one who was "on it." But
this how do twrrc. did not affect his
general intercourse with the public to
the extent of giving a ruggedness or a
grossuess to his address for he was
unremittingly polished in demeanor
and suave of tongue. This however
did not prevent u telegram from pass-1
ing over tho wires to Sheriff" Barkley
telling an ugly talc about J. N. K. The
purport of it was that J. N. K. had
killed a man in Mississippi and that if
.1. N. K. was in Dallas to take hi in
in out of the heat or cold aecordingto
t lie season. The alert K got wind of
this and after borrowing from Mr.
Klchurdsou connected with the house
of Messrs. B. F. Luce & Co. a superbly
silver mounted six-shooier he fade?
away southward. "Now" says our in-
stant and wide awake sheriff' Major
Barkley to deputy Tom Floyd as soon
as the telegram was received saying
that Iiskridge was wanted "proceed
to bring in Mr. K. !" Then Floyd
swooped down on his prey like an
eagle and fastened on him ut Troupe
on the International railroad. In step-
ping from the cars he huw Eskridge
in un upstairs room of a hotel at the
window. Eskridgo saw Floyd and
mudo for the opposite window leaped
out and was on the point of moving
out of sight. Quick us u Hash of light-

when Floyd brings down Its trgger;
'Move uot another step" shouted

back tho foiled yet still daring lugitive
ni.d then attempting to draw a weap-
