TALK WITH BUPEKINTE-TIBNT BA-
KED W. WTKLEOBAl-H CO.
"Yes sir be hM got tbe upper band o
bli position and by tbe way boys that la
rmithing remarkable" eatd a reporter
last evening addreaelna several of the sans
which fully endorse what he had su id con-
cerning Mr. L. 0. Baker the superintend-
ent of the southern divibion of the Western
Union Telegraph company whose bead-
quarters are at St. Lous and out of whom
the reporters had been trying
to eet some telegraph news. He Is a gen-
tleman of aUauie manners courteous aDd
uleaaant and Impresses one with the faot
that it is the man who holds the position
and not the position the man as is fre-
quently the case where the pompousnesa of
the person in tbe latter case is always pro-
nounced. Mr. Baker stated that he was
here looking after the general interest of the
companv and that the operations of the
Suit Colorado & Santa Fe railroad
in the erection of a line between Dallas
and Cleburne.which he regarded as an in-
fringement upon tbe rights of his company
had claimed a part of his time and at-
tention. In response to a question asked
by the reporter as to telegraph matters in
Texas he (aid that the company was do-
ins a first-class business in this state and
that the lines of the company were wo-
greasing more rapidly within ber border
in the way of extension than
inv state in the Union.
As to the late strike be said that the
striking oporator- had made fnevou
mistake. They were getting good living
-waeeB and did not realize how well they
were doing untU they were out of employ-
ment. As fars tbe effects wereconoerned
the company had forgotten that there had
ever been such a thing as a strike. The re-
porter asked how the telephone line; in
