that Edward R. Kone announces himself as
a candidate for re-election to the office of
County Judge. He has held the position
by favor of the people for a number of

made an acceptable officer.

The County Judge has made his distribu
tion to the different districts based npon the
soholastio population of each district and
has given each child 5 25.
Judge Kone favored us with the above
and further informs us that the Bchool Trus
tees have all qualified. It was not decided
when the Free- Schools would open. The
State Superintendent recommends that they
be opened simultaneously and all close at
once but the Judge said it was not thought
practicable to do so in this oouuty. He
said that here in San Marcos no stops were
taken to start another school in place of
that of Prof. Richardson which has been
suspended in oousequenoe of the ill health
of Mrs. Riobardson.
P. S. In order to a clearer understanding
of the matter we should have stated that a
meeting of the school trustees of this county
was held at this place on Monday and some
of the results are set forth above.
From a Sptclsl Reporter.
The Ice cream supper given by the mem
bers of the Aid Society of the Presbyterian
church in the Court House yard Friday
night was well attended and proved to be
one of the most pleasant affairs of the sea-
son. Misses Joyce Storey Franklin Poole
Bridges Booker Hockett and others served
the refreshments gracefully and with due
attention to the wants of all. The different
tables were tastefully decorated with flowers
from the trees hung beautifully colored lan-
terns while occasionally the entire grounds
were illuminated with bright lights. At one
of the tables was a "Fortune Cake" where
those desiring could have revealed to them
theii future partners in life. Many eagerly
availed themselves of this opportunity
especially old bachelors. Another interest-
ing feature was the ".lost office." The
hearts of many were made glad by the
receipt of letters from friends far and near.

Almost a tragedy occurred near this place
on Sunday. The body of a negro named
Green was found on the railroad track be
tween this place and Hunter and it was re-
ported that it bore the evidenoes that he had
been murdered before being placed on the
track. So Mayor Cock accompanied by
Marshal Prince Sheriff Barber deputy
Sheriff Turner. Judge. Kone Frank Oban-
ion W. C. Dugger aud a dozen negros start
ed for the scene in hand-cars in order to
hold an inquest.
While going on a down grade an obstrac-
tiou it was thought appeared ahead and an
attempt was made to use the brakes to check
the progress of the car. Messrs. Cock.
Prince and Barber as we learn sat in front
on some loose scantling which the opera-
tion of the brakes threw off and of course
also threw off the three parties named
front of the car. All were injured the two
former quite seriously and Prince worst of
all. We called to see him on Tuesday morn.
ing and found him fearfully bruised and
lacerated about the head and face. Two of
his ribs are reported broken and he may
have sustained even worse internal injuries
though we bust such is not the case. May
or Cock was also badly injured mainly as
we leam about his lower limbs. A negro
worked the car lever. Prince expressed to
our reporter the opinion that whisky was at
the bottom of the affair.

Couaideruig the total failure of crops last
year and the prospect of a very short cot-
ton cnip this aaaaon the ruanner la which
oar town has gone and i yet goiug ahead la
not a little remarkable. A Urge number of
good aud hamlaoma building have gone up
during the present aaaaon and we vera told
oa Tueaday at the lumberyard of Christian A
Co. that they had uever before had ao many
order for lumber as at present Improv
nieuts are In progreaa in all part of the
town and the building we era informed
are nearly all substantial frames Instead of
the bos or baloon concern which bav
heretofore ao largely prevailed. W believe
there la not a vacant house in our town
whereas formerly at this season there have
been many "to let" Apropos our men of
mean should take the hint and go to work
and build house for rent It require but
little time and a comparatively small outlay
in this country to erect buildlugs and there
ia no doubt many more would be occupied
at once if we bad them.
Upon the whole the outlook for the fu
ture of Ban Marco waa never befoie ao
promising aa it is now.
The School Ilouee ai a Sign.
An exchange truthfully remark:
"There is no surer sign of a lack of in
telligence and refinement in a neighborhood
than a dilapidated and alovenly school
house; its benches hacked with knives and
stained with ink; its doors unhinged its
floor covered with dirt and its window open
to sun and rain. On the other hand if you
ee a school house neat in detign freshly
paiuted in repair with a small turfed yard
filled with beautiful shade trees you in
stinctively iufer that the families of the
neighborhood are enterprising and intelli
gent ' If the school house is what it ought
to be you are likely to find in it a compe
tent teacher aud well behaved pupils. In
such a neighborhood moreover you will be
likely to find the farms well taken care of
the fences trim the houses in good repair.
The town which neglects its schools is on
the high road to ruin.
