SOME AUSTIN COUNTY, TEXAS, FAMILIES
Written on the bottom of my letter to Mrs. Tottenham, she
wrote, "Add Landes to your list. They came from Ky. and one son
was a member of the firm of Wallis, Landes & Co., Cotton Brokers
of Galveston, years ago." In my list of families sent to her she
underscored the following: ALEXANDER, BELL, BETHANY, BREWER,
BOYNTON, BOYD, CHESLEY, CLEVELAND, COLLINS, COCHRAN, DABNEY,
FRANCIS, FOSTER, HARVEY, McDADE, McNUTT, MINTON, MURRAY, PIER,
PERKINS, SWITZER, SHELBURNE, SCALES and WASHAM.

Dear Miss Hotchkiss:
Thanks for your letter of inquiry. Wish I had a more complete
record of my families--Maybe when you finish your work, I can get
it all straight.
For further information of the Reese and Whittington families,
I suggest you write Mrs. Raphila Wade of Yoakum. IShe has lived
much longer than I and knew more of the family record than I do.
Her mother was a Whittington of the long ago.
My son in Galveston at school is Edwin Tottenham, living in
the Phi Chi Frat House at 1314 Ave. E, 3rd year student.
If there's anything I can help you out in, let me know. About
Joel Lakey--if he came from N. C. , I won't write you--but if from
another state, will let you know. Will try to find out from my
husband's mother who is 93, entirely deaf and sees poorly, but
mind 0. K.
Best wishes,
Mrs. W. F. Tottenham
P. S. Have found a notation that says Joel Lakey was a native of
N. C. but came from La. to Texas in 1824. "
The following letter gave me the address of the writer of the
two foregoing letters.

"Your letter received. I don't think I can give you any information
that w uld be of any good to you. My Memory is not so good now as
it used to be. I have been in bad health for the past four years.
You may write to my Brother, M. F. Armstrong and his wife, Mission,
Texas. She was a Miss Keesee and raised at Chapel Hill. Also
W. F. Tottenham and his wife at Brenham, Texas. She was a Miss
Reese of Semp. ,onious, Texas. They both were well posted on everybody
in Austin and Washington Counties. I am sorry I could not
give you anything...
