NO CAUSE FOR ALARM.
Not Much Snow On the Mountains
North Of Here A Letter Received-There
has been a great
deal of talk lately regard-
ing the' Junusual amount of snow
on the mountains north of El Paso and
tbe possibility of a great rush of water
coming down the Rio Grande this
spring. The following letter which
was recsived regarding the matter ex
nlains Itself.
I have been corresponding with rail
road men in Colorado and northern
New Mexico who hye full knowledge
of the snow-fall on the head waters of
the Rio Grande and its tributary. Mr.
Hurlev.suoerlntendent of the Santa Fe
route at Las Vegas advises that we
need have no uneasiness as the snow
fall ha not been more than usual
Today I am in receipt of a letter from
Cole Lvdon. superintendent of the
Denver & Rio Grande Ry. at Ala
mosa. (the track under bis supervision
follows the Rio Grande practically
from it's bead waters to forty miles
north of Snta Fe) from which X quote
the following which takes a load off
our minds as Mr. Lydon has been In
that country for twenty years and is
the best posted man on the subject I
know of:
"As to the prospects of high water
from the Rio Grande this year I am
inclined to believe you will not be
troubled very much on acoount of the
snowfall not being very beavy on the
Rio Grande: tbe Arkansas I expect
will be very high this year on account
of so much enow in that part oi tne
country but I do not think the Rio
Grande will trouble you very mucn li
any."
TO INCREASE WATER SUPPLY.
The G H & S A. Are Just Complet
ing a Pump House At This Point
One of the Best Along the
Line.
"There is the most complete pump
house between New Orleans and ban
Francisco." said Jerry Faust yester
day pointing at the1 pump house
which is just beiog completed by .the
G. H.. a short ways south of the round
house. "Everything is plumb andsquare
and it is equipped as good as any
structure of the kind along tbe line of
this road. The pump pit is 16 feet
square and 11 feet deep ana is waned
with brick."
The building itself is a frame struc-
ture 28 by 36 and 16 feet high and yes
terday the painters were at work de
corating the interior of this up-to-date
structure.
Mr. Faust thinks that he will be
ready to put a fire In the new boiler
aod s 'art one of the big pumps in mo
tion Monday.
Sometime next month the company
will start to sink four more wells in
the immediate vicinity of the pump-
house. This structure now stands in
the center of a group of eight wells.
all producing a good supply of water
but regardless of this the company will
sink four more so as to have an abund
ance of water on this end of tbe line
Water can be reached at a deoth of 12
feet where the pumpbouse now stands
but the wells are over 100 feet deep as
better water may be had at that depth

Lost Chickens.
Through some mistake a crate con
taining seven chickens was: put off tbe
G. H.& S. A. train the other day at
Lobo. Tbe crate remained on the
platform for some time and as no one
seemed to own it in that locality tney
were picked up and thrown into a mat
erial car on a train beaded tms way.
They were discovered by men working
in tne yards and an investigation was
made but no one seemed
to know anything about them. Their
presence was reported to Agent Mc
Carthy and be ordered them to the
freight depot. There they were fed
and watered and tbe one which-had died
en route from exposure was removed
and buried according to tbe rites of
tbe chicken church. They were load
ed on the east bound passenger
train yesterday afternoon and again
sent east but as they were not sup
plied with tickets tneir destination is
very uncertain. - .

and trains are running on schedule
time. It is thought that tbe fire was
the work of tramps as many of
them have been put off at that point
lately.
J. W. Lucas the popular foreman of
tbe G H. & S. A. blackshith shop is
making the race for council man from
the third ward on the republican

trious and will make an excellent

"The sprint of the year is comiDg
on" Baid a Santa Fe man yesterday
"and a litle repairing would not injure
our depot a particle. It needs pain
and the shutters need repairing. Tbe
building is all right but it needs hx-
ing." Strange but true.
Engine No. 1624 which has been
helping the freight trains up the hill
west of here on the Southern Pacific
has been sent to Tucson Arizona and
a new 12 wheel engine will be sent to
this point as a helper. Tbe 1624 was
considered too light.
H. R&yner has been appointed depot
police st the G. H. depot. The neces-
sity of a policeman at that point has
been felt for some time and Mr. Hayner
is a good man for the place Other
roads should; do likewise and re ieve
the city police of the duty of attending
the trains.
Morelle Parker a young man who
for the past five years has been em-
ployed in the G. H. & S. A. shops at
this point as machinist aprentice died
at 2:20 o'clock this morning at the res-
sidence of Mrs. John Hammond of
pneumonia after several days of severe
suffering. His home was in San
Antonio and his mocner was tele-
graphed to come. She left on the first
train for this city and would have
reached here in time to see her boy
still alive but tbe burning of the
bridges delayed tbe train several
hours and tbe young man was dead
when she reached his bedside ne

Would Not Talk.
The veto yesterday of the bill by
Governor Sayers which had for its ob
ject the consolidation of tbe Missouri
Kansas and Texas and the Sherman
and Shr eve port and Southern Railway
companies was a topic earnestly dis
cussed in railway circles here today
An effort was made to get an expres
sion from the Katy's local legal de
partment here this morning but the
gentlemen who represent the company
in this capacity did not care to give ut
terance on tne suoieot as tney naa no
given the matter any attention and
were not able to speak on tbe legal
phase of the situation. However Mr
Thompson said from what he knew of
tbe case be was of tbe opinion tnat tne
governor's veto of the bill would great
ly retard contem plated railroad
building and construction in the state
The matter he said would receive prop
er attention from the legal department
of the company at Dallas.
Other railroad people here condemn
the action of the governor. They claim
the veto will practically
Btop all improvements that
the Katy has been figuring
on for months especially the San An
tonio extension which would when
finished complete the connection be
tween that city and San Marcos.
Ex-Governor Hogg who was here
last week said he expeoted tbe veto
but had little Jfarther to say on the
subject. It will be remembered that
he has been moving heaven and earth
to defeat the consolidation bill aod the
result of the veto by Governor bayers
yesterday virtually crowns his efforts
in that direction. The final outcome
of tbe measure says a prominent rail
road man today will evidently have
the result of retarding many railroad
enterprises contemplated in Texas.

Rise of a Railroad Man.
Kansas City railroad men are almost
a unit in expressing pleasure over the
promotion of E. O. McCormick to tbe
position of passenger traffic manager
of tbe Southern Pacific system at San
Francisco although regretting his de-
parture from St. Louis where as pas
senger traffic manager of the tsig Four
he made his mark. His resignation It
is understood takes effect April 1 and
he will at once proceed to San Fran
cisco to enter upon his new duties.
Mr. MoCormick's rise to one of the
highest railroad positions in the coun-
try and at a salary of $25000 a year
has only -been accomplished by hard
work. He began at the lowest rung in
the business ladder but step by step he
has mounted to the top and as tbe tra
ffic manager of tbe Southern Pacific
will exercise a power that has been
vouchsafed to few railroad officials. He
is well known in Kansas .City and he
and his -affairs were popular themes
for discussion in railroad circles yes-
terday. Kansas City Journal.
