He Talks About the East.
C. B. Eddy who ha9 been in New
York for the past month returned here
yesterday morning after very pleas-
ant trip.
Mr. Eddy says thnt the country has
never been in a raor prosperous con-
dition than it is at present. Great
business activity prevails everywhere.
Manufacturers in a'l branches have
more orders on their books than they
can fill in the next five years. All the
steel works are running full blast work-
ing the full limit day and night but
still can not catch up with their or-
der?. The presidential question in 1900
seems to be a settled question in the
opinion of our eastern friends. Both
parties will make the trusts an issue.
Mr. Eddy says that from what he can
learn that silver will not be an is
sue.
- The crops throughout the east are in
excellent condition especially in Kan-
sas where tie corn crop If they have
no warm winds in the next three weeks
will be the largest in the history of the
state. From present indications it will
be almost impossible . to secure cars
enough to ship the immense amount of
corn in sight.
Mr. Eddy is very glad to be home
again. The heat in the east is so in-
tense at present that prostrations are
of daily occurrence.
The White Oaks is to have five new
engines of the best and latest pattern
also new freight and passenger cars
which will arrive here soon.
CRUSHED BETWEEN CARS
Conductor Russell Killed While Per-
forming His Duty.
The body of L. D. Russell a South
ern Pacific freight conductor was
brought to this city by the Owl train
yesterday morning. Russell was killed
at Rowan a small way ctatlon in Kern
county Tuesday night by being crush-
ed between two sections of a train of
which he had charge.
The train which was a double head-
er broke in two by the pulling out of a
drawhead. While the conductor and
brakemen working between the sec-
tions to repair the break the engineer
of one section started his engine. The
two sections were thus unexpectedly
pushed together ana Russell was
oaught between the cars. His body
was almost cut in two and he was dead
in the twinklicg of an eye. The coro-
ner of Kern county held an inquest
but the body was sent to this city for
burial.
Russell has been in the employ of
the Southern Pacific company about
twelve years having been a conductor
about seven years of that time He
was a member of the Order of Railway
Conductors. He leaves a widow who
lives on North Avenue A East Los
Angeles. Undertaker Paul of the East
Side has charge of the funeral arrange-
ments. Los Angeles Times.
A TRAFFIC AGREEMENT
Between f anta Fe and Denver Roads
Is Probable
It is tsoertainei that one of the
business propositions being discussed
propositions being discussed in Denver
between the Fort Worth and Denver
aod Colorado Southern officials is the
deal by which the above roads may
handle the freight traffic of the Santa
Ke originating in California and other
southwestern seaports. The Santa Fe
now ends its freight from Tri-
nidad to Newton Kan. thence
outh over the Gulf Colorado and San-
ta Fe into Texas but if the arrange-
ments now pending are perfected the
Denver road will take the freight at
Trinidad via Fort Worth making a
savin? of over a 300-mile haul. It is
also proposr d in case this deal is made
that all freights originating in Texae
and the south Intended for the Santa
Fe will go by the fame route.
It is believed in Fort Worth that in
case ths arrangement is made the Den-
ver people will use the Santa Fe pas-
senger depot instead of the Texas and
Pacific. It is also very probable the
Cotton Belt will do likewise. Houston

tion in the United States: The rail-
road companies must be authorized by
law to pool and divide business. All
the railroads must be combined in a
few enormous non-competitive systems
or they must pass under the ownership
of the nation.
The sentiment of the country is so
averse to allowing the railroads to
agree on rates and divide business that
there is hardly the slightest likelihood
that congress will legalize the pooling
method which the railroad managers
desire. Hence only two of the contin-
gencies named by Mr. Morton are with-
in the range of probability. Either the
government must own the railroads or
they will ultimately be merged into
a few vast systems so powerful that
competition will be out of the question
and the transportation business will
become a monopoly. . Judging from
present tendencies that Is what will
happen before the sentiment of the
people reaches the stage which would
make government ownership possible.
But such a concentration of railroads
in a few hands will never be permit-
ted without -the strictest law
of government supervision. The three
possible developments named
by Mr. Morrol seem to be merged into
one by the logic of prevailing tenden-
cies -and the thing which at the present
moment seems most probable ia a half
dozen or even fewer vast corporations
owning all the 257000 miles of railroad
tracks and the million and a half of
cars and engines that are In use in the
country today these corporations in
turn to be so completely under the con-
trol and regulation of the government
that they will have little or nothing to
say about rates but win be practically
agents of the government operating
the railroads distributing a reason
able amount of the profits of the bust
ness to their security holders and pay
ing all excess of earntngs into the Na
tional treasury r i .-
Suoh an arrangement would be pre
ferable to government ownership for
it would leave the railroads in the
hands of business men instead of poli
ticians. It would avoid the necessity
of an enormous increase in the civil
service and give the country all the
benefits of stable and uniform rates
as well as the advantages of individual
and corporate enterprise in the devel-
opment and extension of the transpor
tation system or the country.
The objection will be urged against
this method that it would immensely
increase the influences that corpora-
tions wield in the government of tbe
country. But that plea may be met by
the question whether 6uch an influence
would be as bad as the danger of par-
tisan control of tbe million employes
of railroads under absolute government
ownership. Kansas City Star.
Santa Fe Extension-
The project to build an extension of
the Santa from Texas westward through
entral New Mexico has been a favo
rite one with Santa Fe people for many
years past ine advantage or tbe route
is found in the fact that it will give
easier grades and a shorter route to
the Pacific coast than at present exists.
The Santa Fe if the scheme is carried
through will be able to handle busi-
ness originating on the Gulf of Mexico
with destination points on the Pacific
ccast.
Should the Santa Fe run its trans
continental trains by way of Amarillo
Texas it is obvious that many New
Mexico points including Las Vegas
will no longer be on tne main line of
tbe road. Just what effect this will
have on the prosperity of the towns on
the present main line of tbe road if
the theory t- us outlined is founded on
reality remains to be seen.
The extension to Ysleta Junction
would probably run close to old Fort
Sumner or Puerto de Luna Guadalupe
county. . .
Result Of Advertising.
Practically complete returns of tbe
traffic carried by the Santa Fe Rail-
road company to tbe National Educa-
tional association meeting at Los An-
geles have been received by the offi-
cials of the road. They show that the
assertion that the Santa Fe road car-
ried a large proportion of the excur-
sionist is founded upon the true facts
in the caee. From July 6th to the 11th
inclusive there were thirty regular
trains run and fifteen extra
trains. Tbe total number of
persons carried on all - trains
who bought excursion tickets was
slightly over 3.300. It is estimated
that the attendance at j-ios Angeles
this week is 10000. This of course in-
cludes teachers and others from Pacific
coast points and making allowance for
these as well as the usual inclination
to overestimate crowds it is evident
that the Santa Fe carried upwards of
50 per cent of the travel from tbe east.
It is thought that tbe return travel
over the Santa Fe will largely indi-

Santa Fe Will Comply.
A Republic special says: This morn

posed suit to be brought by the state
against the Southern Kansas of Texas.

The railway shops at Raton now are
running ten hours a day and six days a

hours late this morning and will pro-
bably not reach here until about about
6 o'clock this evening.
L. E. Foote formerly foreman of tbe

of the round house at Raton.
Owing to the large amount of busi-
ness being done the Santa Fe R. R.
has been compelled to add 200 feet of
platform to their joint warehouse.
C. E. Miner general western passen-

headquarters at St. Louis arrived
here this morning on his way to Mexi
co.
Tbe two new Dickson locomotives.
designed for passenger service out of
Las Vegas are equipped with elec-
tric headlight and electric lights in the
cabs.
Hundred of carloads of steel rails
are passing througbBhere daily on their
way west. The S. P. Co. are taking
up all the old rails and replacing them
with steel rails of the first quality.
Mr. E. E. Neal an attornev at law
formerly of San Antonio Texas has de
cided on locating in Alamogordo. N.
M. Mr. Neal has only been there a
short while and already has several
cases.
Mr. J. R. Mobley formelv of Austin.
Texas has rented the store at 210 St.
Louis St. and will open a first class
grocery house about Aug. 1st. Special
attention will be devoted to Green
groceries.
Chief Car Repairer Borcbidine of
the G. H. returned yesterday afternoon
with the wrecking crew from the scene
of the wreck near Fay. Texas. The
wreck did not amount to much and only
caused a delay of a few hours.
A. Hoffman general freight and pas
senger agent for the Mexican Central
win arrive Here shortly from Mexico.
Mr Hoffman has been in very poor
health lately and has been granted a
leave of absence of several months
which he will spend in the east.
The southwest seems to be at the
present time the soene of extensive
operations on the part of the Santa Fe
railroad tbe scope of which is onJv be
ginning to dawn upon tbe railroad
world. The Santa Fe plans have evi
dently been carefully laid and as care-
fully kept secret until matters have
reached the stage where secrecy is no
