ton in one day. A wonderful record
for one day's receipts in a short crop

The Southwest Texas editors will be
given a warm greeting by Houston
when their association meets there
next week.
Fort Worth has finished her assess-
ment of intangible franohise property
and finds for three years that it
amounts to 821732624.
That democratic carnival at Dallas
was a great big success and the fair
managers are to be congratulated upon
the way they handled it.
About sixty counties have no repre-
sentatives on the confederate pension
list and if there are eligible pension-
ers in those counties they cannot share
in the distribution of the 8100000 giv-
en for pensions.
Arizona
Tucson will have a football team this
winter.
A postofflce ba9 been established at
Metcalf.
Ph enix is going to have a six day
carnival.
The Tucson fire department is now
in.prime condition.
Flagstaff has succeeded to be the most
moral town in Arizona.

Bishop Kendrick of the Episcopal

The sub-port now located at Bisbee
is to be moved to Naco. The Mexican
sub-port now at La Morlta will also be
located at Naoo.
Several parts of the Territory has
been visited by light showers during
the week.
A number of Arizona cowboys will be
in evidence at the contest to be held in
St. Louis this month.
The territorial Sunday school asso-
ciation will meet In Tucson on the 21st
and 22nd of the present month.
Preliminary work has begun on the
proposed railroad from Yuma to Adair
bay on the Gulf of California.

During the present year the tussock
mouth killed 1024 trees on the streets
and parks of Buffalo.
A law requiring corporations to pay
wages at least monthly has been de-
clared constitutional in California.
The largest mass of pure rock salt in
the world lies under the province of
Galicia Hungary. It is known to be
550 miles long 20 broad and 250 feet In
thickness.
Andrew Carnegie's gift of 850000 for
a public library in Oakland Cai. was
secured by the efforts of Henry A.
Chittenden a newspaper man of that
town who first interested Mr. Carne-
gie in the place.
Captain John G. Cameron command-
er of the great Oceanic is a native of
New Zealand but has been afloat since
earlv bovhood. He is 50 years old
nearly 6 feet tall broad-shouldered and
athletic.
Subscriptions received to date for
the Dewey home fund now amount to
827065. The number of subscribers is
29.624. which makes the average sub
scription less than a dollar.
M. Zola is nothing if not unique.
He says that what most impressed bim
during his sojourn in London was the
number of bairplne he observed on
the sidewalks.
The Council of the Board of Trade.of
Halifax is investigating the possibil-
ity of preventing shipping disasters
along the coast of Nova Scotia by
means of wireless telegraphy.
A tramp recently arrested in Buffalo
had in his pockets a pair of shears
needles and thread a pocket mirror a
comb a hairbrush a toothbrush toilet
soap and a manicure set.
A careful canvass of the leading
wholesale bouses of Chicago shows
that the increase In the volume of
trade In electrical supplies for this
year over the total figures for 1898 is
estimated at 83000000.
A fruit grower in Mendocino county
Cal. has this season shipped 69683
pounds of Bartlett pears which were
raised on four and one-half acres of
of ground. He reoeived 83 per ton for
them under a contract made last
spring.
Rev. Hugh Prloe Hughes in the
London Methodist Times protests
against "the first of English gentle
men the Prince oi wales oeing al
lowed as chairman of the British com
mittee to the Paris exposition to asso
ciate with liars foreigners and assas-
sins." The entire cucumber crop in the dis-
trict northeast of Benton Harbor
Mich. representing over 2000000
bushels of small pickets per season for
the last ten years has in the last ten
days been completely destroyed by a
foreign red bug. The total loss to
growers is estimated at over 8100000.
Governor Johnston of Alabama has
just granted a unique pardon to John
Boston a negro of Russell county.
Boston was serving a term for stealing
chickens and the governor granted
him a pardon upon condition that for
twelve months he should not buy steal
or eat another chicken or any portion
thereof.
