The YOUNG (DD 580)
The second YOUNG was laid down on May 7, 1942, at Orange, Texas, by the Consolidated Steel
Corporation and launched on October 15, 1942. It was sponsored by Mrs. J. M. Shillings and
commissioned on July 31, 1943. Lieutenant Commander George B. Madden was in command.
After initial shakedown, she served in the escort for the IOWA, the battleship which carried
President Franklin Roosevelt across the Atlantic to the Tehran Conference, in November 1943.
After joining the Pacific Fleet and participated in the following historic operations:
1) Alaskan Campaigns till August 1944
2) Leyte Operations till November 1944
3) Luzon Operation in January 1945
4) Corregidor
5) Mindanao
In August she headed back to Pearl Harbor for repairs, but by then the hostilities ceased. On
October 27 she arrived in New York where President Harry S. Truman reviewed the assembled ships.
On November 1 she proceeded to Charleston where she was placed in reserve and decommissioned.
On May 1, 1968, her name was struck from the Navy list. On March 6, 1970, she was sunk as a
target off the mid-Atlantic coast.
The YOUNG earned five battle stars during World War II.58
