Im not guilty .of ' this murder but I've 'boon proven

offort for my life. I shall not Bwjng for six wooka and mcanwhilo I
want all "your time. I'll givo you $ 500 for your timo and $10000
if you'll find out who committed tho murdor and thus exonorato mo."
Tho murdorcd man was a Mr. Jarvis. Ho and tho condemned Ilor-
ton lived near each othor and had' had business deolinga together.
Ono night Horton visited Jarvis Thoy had hot words Ilorton accus-
ing Jarvis of having swindled him and tho noxt morning Jarvis was
found doad shot through tho body. Tho murdered man was tho only
poraon in tho houso oxcQpt tho servants who slept in tho back part
and did not hear tho shot. .
I worked a month endoavoring to find a clow to some ono who
would havo had an intorcat in Mr. Jarvis' death. I failed signally.
Taking a boxof toolB I went as a final expedient" to tho room
at 9 in tWovoning -tho hour Ilorton had visited Jarvis and
beganntfsyBtomatio examination of tho locks window catches indeed
ring pertaining to entrance and exit. T found nothing and at
ldnight tired and disappointed went to sleep on a loungo. Somehow
I couldn't get rid of tho fancy that I might seo something during tho
night to give mo a clow.
But I didn't. With tho life of a fellow being on my hands I slept
but little and was awake at daylight in tho morning. T was in a library
and besides books it was filled with curiosities.
Among other things I noticed on tho wall a pair of mooso's horns
supporting an antique arquobus. It was hung in such a manner that
it did not point parallel with the wall but at an aeuto angle. Tho sun
had been up some timo and. its rays were converged by a convex glass
in a fancy window into a brilliant spot on tho wall. I watched tho spot
travel aa the sun rose and it passed a short distance from tho powder
pan in tho arquebus. I looked at tho chair in which Mr. Jarvis had
been accustomed to sit and noticed that the weapon pointed directly at
it. It occurred to mo that if the sun spot had passed exactly over tho
pan and tho gun had boon loaded it would havo been fired. Then it
suddenly entered my head that tins sun spot and gun might havo been
connected with Jarvis' death.
I got up and oxamined tho gun. It was empty. 1 called tho serv-
ants. They reported that their mastor had kept it loaded declaring
that it was yet good enough to protect him against burglars. At any
rate I believed. Jarvis had boen killed by tho gun even if tho sun Bpot
had not fired it.
Tho next morning I took an assistant from an astronomical observ-
atory into tho room. Ho noticed tho e'ourso traveled by tho sun spot
and figured its track on tho date of the murder. After finishing his
computations ho announced that tho spot on that date passed over tho
pan of tho arquebus. One thing more. I got up on a stopladdor
looked down tho gun's barrel and saw that it pointed directly at Mr.
As soon as I had completed these investigati ns 1 went to the
prisoner and announced the result. I shall never forget the look l
intelligence and hope that came into his face. Tho ;i'xt morning 1 li.
tho prisoner's attorney in tho room and tho next the judgo thai li.nl
sentenced him. Tho attorney formed tho thecy that Mr. Jarvii was
sitting in his chair tho morning the sun spot fired tho arquebus and
Tho prisoner was accorded a new trial but it was a very short one.
Tho jury after visiting the room and seeing a demonstration by tho
attorney who arranged that tho sun sp'ot should fire a bullet int6 Mr.
Jarvis' chair acquitted the prisoner. Tho incident 3aved his life and
made my fortune.
