oral were forced to announce no more
sufferers could bo received.
Although many thousand tenement
dwellers availed themselves of the op
portunlty given by the open parks to
sleep In the outer air. there were many
more that could not leave their homes
In the parched and sweltering lower
section of the city. It was In that sec-
tion that most of the suffering prevailed.
While thousands of persons left their
homes In the flats and tenements of
this city seeking In the public parks
relief from Tuesday night's heat by
far the greatest crowds gathered on the
sands of the seashore at Coney Island.
Trains arriving there even after mid-
night were crowded and It was esti-
mated that an army of 10.000 heat-tortured
men women and children the
tatter being In the majority made beds
In the aud. A northwest breete blew
over the Island bringing murh comfort
to the sweltering thousands. A Urge
force of extra policemen was kept on
duty and guarded the sleepers from
harm.

city Wednesday when the resident
awoke after a night which hail brought
little relief. Scarcely a breath of air
stirred during Tuesday iilicht nnd the

thermometer was at 4 o'clock Wed-

risen to 83. Humidity was 61. and the
wind which was from the northwest
was light.

from heat were reported from Connec-
ticut In twenty-four hours up to S
O'clock Wednesday morning. Official
temperature at 9 o'clock was S9 de-

er prevailed again Wednesday.
TERRIBLE EXPLOSION.
Lightning Strikea Powdar and the Re-
sults Are Terrible.
Des Moines. la. July 19. An explo-
sion took place In the West riverside
coal mine two miles west of this city.
A telephone message from the mine
stated that lightning struck the pow-
dre house shortly after o'clock. The
powder house contained a considerable
quantity of dynamite unci the explo-
sion which followed was terrific. Five
men were reported dead and It wa
stated the wounded might numb-r
twenty. The names of those dead are:
John Woods. Will Latimer Walter
Kvans Zlnk Davis. Newell. The
dead men had gone Into the powder
house to secure their dally supply of
dynamite to be used In the mine. They
had not been In the shed more than a
minute or two when the structure was
struck by llhtnlng. Igniting the entire
quantity of dynamite blowing build-
ing and men entirely to pieces.

turned From the Far East.
Chicago. July 19. Mrs. C. D. Uager-
ty. recently returned from Chefoo
where her husband was correspondent
for the Associated Press during the
long military and naval operations
against Port Arthur has died . here
suddenly. Mrs. Ilagerty had been III
at Chefoo. but had recovered before
leaving the orient Her death followed
an operation made necessary by an at-
tack of apiiendlcltis. Mr. Hsgerty was
with his wife when she died he hav-
ing recently been assigned to his for-
mer duties at Chicago.
