Trust Company of Cleveland For Mak-
ing an Assignment hut Expecting to
Settle Eventually In Full
Cleveland. O. May 14. The Reserve
Trust company has made an assign-
ment to the Superior Savings and
Trust company. Liabilities are about
2700O00. lanbllity to realize on out-
standing loans Is said to have precip-
itated the failure. Officers of the com-
pany say that tho depositors will be
paid in full.
The capital and surplus of the com-
pany are $.100000. Adam Graham Is
president and William N. Perry sec-
retary and treasurer. Th latter was
formerly a director In tje Ohio Trust
company of Norwalk 0. which closed
Its doors In January last.
ONE OF HEAVIEST.
Storm Lasted Over Three Hours and
Much Rain Descended.
Palestine Tex. May 14. This city
and county were visited by one of the
heaviest storm late Wednesday after-
noon and night which lasted over three
hours. Over four inches of rain fell
and much damage was done. Roth of
the waterworks dams were washed
away and the city Is practically with-
out water and fire protection.
The home of George Wallace near
this city was struck by lightning al-
though no one was injured as the
house was empty at the time.
It is believed that considerable dam-
age has been done to the fruit crops
and the tobacco crops.
All trains on the International and
Great Northern railway have been dis-
continued on account of washouts and
no passenger trains were run Wednes-
Much damage to the saltworks near
here was also done.

The Texas Firemen's Association De-
nounces Anti-Pass Law.
Waco May 14. The Texas Volun-
teer Firemen's association went on
record as favoring a law making it pos-
sible to have a standard hose thread
so all companies will be equipped alike

Houston May 14. Thieves suppos-
edly juveniles broke into the new
store of Spence & Trotter on Congress
avenue and stole 16ooo picture postal
cards worth over $100. The propri-
etors had just entered business and
lost almost their entire stock.
Crownsheet Blows Out.
Galveston May 14. A locomotive
of a Trinity and Brazos Valley railway
freight train was badly wrecked anil
two men scalded at Virginia Point
while the train was approaching bay
bridge. Head Brakeman J. Matthews
was scalded on the head by escaping
steam. K. C. Lucas the engineer was
burned about the body and hands. Both
were taken to the hospital. They will
recover. The accident was caused by
the crownsheet blowing out.

French and Spanish Soldiers Engaged
In an Encounter.

encounter between some French nd
Spnnlsh troops quartered here. The
Spaniards fired first. It is alleged and
the French zouaves replied. One Span-
lard was killed and another wounded
while the French had two men wound-
ed. At the conclusion of the Incident
Colonel Desmoutlers assumed com-
mand over the area reserved under
the policing agreement with Spain.
Noted Pianist Dying.
New York May 14. Miss Jesse
Shay the well known pianist who
toured this country with .Tan Kubelik
tho Bohemian violinist as piano so-
loist. Is reported in a dying condition
at the Presbyterian hospital where
she was operated upon May 5. At tho
hospital it Is stated no hope is en-
tertained for her recovery.
White Sold to Shreveport.
Montgomery Ala. May 14. Man-
ager Tom Fisher of the Mobile base-
ball club announces the sale of Catch-
er Foley White to the Shreveport club
of the Texas leauue. Massing will be
retained and Torrey and Noblrtt

Five Dead and Thirty-One Hurt
Taken to Shreveport.
Shreveport May 14. The relief
train which was sent to Gilliam i-
turned bearing1 five dead bodies aid
thirty-one injured victims of the tor-
nado which passed over the northern
portion of this parish Wednesday.
Among the dead are Mrs. John Gard-
ner Mrs. Henry Godfrey John Simp-
son and eight negroes but search for
victims In the debris left by the tor-
nado may reveal others and It Is be-
lieved that the total will reach twenty-five
dead and 100 Injured.
The entire village of Gilliam was
wiped out while much damage was
done at Oil City Belcher and Black

borhood devastated by the storm over

Austin May 14. It has been dis-
closed that Governor Campbell has no
authority to authorize the attorney
general to lnstitue suit for cancellation
of contracts made by the textbook
board with the book publishers. The
contract entered Into between the text-
book board and book publishers spe-
cifically provides that in the event a
contract is secured through fraud or
collusion by either party steps may
be taken for the cancellation of such
contract "at the direction of the gov-
ernor and the state board of educa-
tion." Consequently It will be seen that
not the governor nor textbook honrd.
