The History of a Sale.
A Crowley lady who follows
the advertisements in the news-
papersbut they all do that
read about a bargain in a Hous-
ton paper. She sent for the gar-
ment but it didn't tit. She sent
it back and had it altered. Again
it didn't tit. Then she called up
the man and talked to him about
it at two-bits a minute. She ex-
plained just $3.05 worth. Ex-
press charges were 7." cents ex-
tra. Not counting postage and
the fun she had trying on the
garment each time her extra ex-
penses were $3. SO. The garment
cost 2.40 in Houston and she
could have bought it in Crowley
for $3.f0. She is now busy fig-
uring out how much she made
by sending away instead of pat-
ronizing the home merchant.
There is a moral in this story.
The moral is not "buy at home'"
although that lesson is obvious.
The moral is for the seller and
not for the buyer. The moral is
this:
If you want to catch and keep
the woman's trade you've got to
show 'em and keep on showing
'em. You've got to advertise.
That's what the Houston mer-
chant did. He showed the Crow-
ley lady. He advertised and the
Crowley lady came a-running
just as they always do.
The Crowley merchant had the
best of it for he had the first
chance to show the home custom-
er and she would have preferred
to buy at home because that
gave her a chance to try on every
garment of that kind and criticise
the establishment for not having
more. It gave her a chance to
tind out whether she had the
right thing before she paid her
money.
Where the home merchant fell
down was not in telling about it
before the wise Houston merch-
ant did. He had the first chance
but he figured that he couldn't
afford to.
It pays to advertise gentle-
men. Crowley (La.) Signal.
The Baptist Meeting.
The Baptist protracted meet-
ing which has been going on for
two week's has been a very suc-
cessful one.
Rev. O. W. Dean has returned
to Hereford but his place as
pivaehcr was ably tilled by
Rev. Lee Sea rbrough of Abilene.
The meeting closed with the
baptizing at the creek yesterday
evening.

The News omits the State re
turns acting in this matter upon
the reasonable presumption that
its readers already know what
they are.
Like all elections the result in
the county was disappointing to
many aside from the candidates
themselves. The News man
failed to get what he voted for in
several instances but he can and
will give his hearty support to
every individual nominated and
so will every other man who is

Bayles E. Cobb Dead.
Dayles E. Cobb passed quietly
and painlessly out of this life at
his home Wednesday at 0:10 p. m.
He was not sick as the term sick-
ness is commonly understood
just tired and worn out and went
to rest. Had he lived until the
coining October he would have
been bl years old. After funeral
services at the residence yester-
day morning the body was ship-
ped to Amariilo for interment.
Mr. Cobb was a native of Ken-
tucky coming to Texas thirty
years ago. The last years of his
life were spent here seven of
them as postmaster he being re-
tired from that position last year
on account of age.
No man stood higher in the es-
teem of our citizenship than did
Dayles E. Cobb.
C. P. Hutchings left the lirst
of the week for St. Louis and
Chicago to lay in a stock of goods
for the new tirm of which hois
manager.
A week or so ago The News
predicted that Attorney General
Davidson's majority over Wynne
would be greater than that of
Senator Bailey's in the May pri-
maries. Looks that way now
don't it?
