ANNOUNCEMENTS
For Mayor:
W. W. HARRIS.
GEO. E. HADLEY.
GOOD ROADS THE VITAL ISSUE.
The people as a whole are not dis-
posed to give very serious considera-
tion to the great highway which is
proposed to be built from Winnipeg
Manitoba to Galveston Texas. They
regard it as a "pipe dream" of some
visionary individual who delights in
erecting air castles dream cities and
great systems of roads. Not so. It is
entitled to every consideration as it
is the outgrowth of well matured
plans thought out and given form by
practical horse-sense hard-working
men.
It Is not Impractical at all but is
feasible and can be accomplished in
much shorter time than many at first
glance would Imagine. To go with In
many of the states this highway takes
the same course as the national high-
ways designated by the governors of
the states for post roads to be built
by the federal government In connec-
tion with the parcels post which is to
be Inaugurated early In January. The
government will construct these cross-
state highways to facilitate the hand-
ling of the great volume of bmlness
that will be created by the parcels
post.
In Texas Governor Colquitt has by
request of the postal department at
Washington designated a number of
these state highways one of which
is to run from Galveston to the Red
River via Houston Bryan Waco etc.
and this new highway the great
Winnipeg-Gulf road has adopted this
national poBt road as laid out by Gov-
ernor Colquitt for Its route through
Texas.
The construction of this road
through the state looks like a gigantic
undertaking at first thought but it is
not. It can be built withall ease and
built quickly hi fact It is more than
half built now. Coming- out of Cal-
veston there is already a perfect road
for the first one hundred miles. This
completed road extends from Galves
ton through Houston to within a few
miles of Hempstead only fifty miles
south of Bryan. On the north when
we reach Falls county and from there
on to the state line nearly every
county has a permanent roadway al
ready built. They have extending
through the county perfectly graded
drained and graveled roads with all
culverts and small bridges made of
concrete and the larger bridges of
steel. From McLennan county north
there would be only a few short con-
necting links to be built. From Hemp-
stead to Marlin would be the major
work of this entire statehlghway and
it can be built in a short time.
The counties through which this
great road runs can well afford to co-
operate in its construction in both
labor and money for it will give a
perfect highway entirely through the
county. In Brazos county it would be
a great thing. Coming into the county
three miles this side of Navasota and
going out at Benchley would give us
a fine north and south line and would
be worth tens of thousands of dollars
to the county.
The whole country Is awakening to
the subject of good roads and Brazos
county must not fall behind. Let us
strike hands with these great state
and national enterprises and also
bend every energy to the construction
of permanent roadways Into every sec-
tion of Brazos county.

President Taft's action in firing

precedent for Grand Old Woodrow to

business.
Some men never amount to a row

whether they want to be "the light of
the world" or the "salt of the earth."

people who want to show you how to
make a lot of money on an invest-
ment of a few dollars. If money could
be made so easily they would make
It themselves and for themselves."
There's a whole book full of wisdom
in that one paragraph and It's exactly
the right doctrine for fathers to teach
their sons.
A bunch of young ladies in Chicago
organized a $5000 club resolving to
marry no man earning less than $5000
a year. The members of the Young
Men's Christian Association made an-
swer by resolving that all fathers who
had trained up their daughters at a
$5000 gait should pay the said sum to
their sons-in-law who by marrying
such high steppers must shoulder the
consequences of the training.

Relatives and Friends of Mexla Man
Misunderstand Message and Meet
Him at Train with Hearse.
Mexia Texas Dec. 18. The famous
cablegram Mark Twain sent back to
America on receipt of information of
his demise "That the accounts of his
death had been very much exag-
gerated" was recalled yesterday when
J. H. Pitts a well known citizen of
this place arrived home from a visit
with relatives at Greenville to find
a hearse with the customary black
trappings a group of sad-looking pall-
bearers with heads bared and a pro-
fusion of flowers. Even the grave had
been dug and many sorrowing friends
had gathered at the residence to at-
tend the funeral which was to be
held under the auspices of the Ma-
sonic lodge. No one was more sur-
prised than Mr. Pitts.
The mistake was due to the mis-
understanding of a message sent in
advance that the body Instead of the
live man would arrive on the morn-
ing train.
STOPPED APPLE
F
Some time ago the railroad commis-
sion refused to stop the practice of
selling produce from cars on sidings
but left the matter with the roads
and In response to numerous requests
over the state a number of railroads
have entered Into an agreement to
stop it Through some mistake the
local agent of the I. & G. N. had re-
ceived no notice from headquarters
and as a car of apples were being
sold from a car on the I. & G. N.
switch In the rear of the Smith Drug
Company tb6 agent last night re-
ceived a telephone message from
the general freight agent at Houston
stating that It must be stopped at
once. The man selling the apples re-
fused to quit and according to In-
structions the car was closed and
sealed by the agent
