DENISON,
SUNDAY * JAN. 26, 1879.
The Sherman Register says some
ugly rumors are started already on
Governor Roberts. It is positively
asserted that he promised the office
of Assistant Attorney General to
Chenoweth, of Bonham, and in vio-
lation of an express and voluntary
promise gave the office to Ball, ol
Jacksboro. It is also said he prom-
ised the office of Secretary of State
to Bartew, of Dallas, and gave it to
Temple to 11. Again, he is charged
with bad faith in the nomination of
Jones for Adjutant General. Talk
about this matter has brought out
the charge against Jones that he has
been drawing pay for two offices
trom the State. 1 He took pay as
Major, commanding the frontier bat-
talion, and also as quartermaster of
that organization. If the charge be
true it would be better to send him
as a special delegate to represent the
interests of the State in the peniten-
tiary than to make him Adjutant
General. All these things are caus-
ing a considerable stir in Austin, and
will awaken a bitter feeling against
the administration at the outset.

Distress in England.
The New York Herald's London
correspondent gives the most deplor-
able accounts of suffering throughout
England. First, is that of a woman
who dropped dead from starvation
within a pistol shot of the Royal
Palace. Her son had been out of
work for five months, and there were
cold and hungry children at home to
recei\e the corpse. In Wolverhamp-
ton a mechanic thirty five years old,
tried to cut his throat. His wife had
just brought him a baby. He had
no work, no money no food. In
another town a laborer was arrested
for stealing a bit of cheese. He told
the judge who tried him that he had
been idle for six weeks; had applied
for aid at the workhouse but had
been refused ; had even asked a po-
liceman to lock him up, so that he
might get a night's lodging. He
was sent to prison for fourteen days.
In the Berwick county the people
attack the butcher's wagons and
bread carts, and rob because they
cannot buy. In Burnley the work-
house is full to overflowing, and the
applications for relief have increased
fifty per cent. In another place the
applications are two-thirds in excess
of ordinary times; over 1500 of an
increase in a single week. In j-,on"
don, close to the Langham hotel and
the splendid mansions of the aristo-
cracy, a boy died of starvation. The
father testified that he could not earn
bread for his son.
These are mere samples. the
whole island is filled with such cases
of distress. In Manchester there aie
over 60,000 fed by charity.
In a lengthy article in opposition
to the occupation tax, the Waco Ex
aminer says "An occupation is not
taxable, it cannot be made taxable by
any political doctrine ever enuncia-
ted since the days of Adam. Prop-
erty is taxable because for its protec-
tion governments are run, persons
are taxable because for their protec-
tion governments is run, but voca-
tions are not susceptible of taxation
unless indeed the manufactures of
the East being especially protected
might be made to pay a special tax.
The government does not, however,
protect a lawyer any more than a
laborer, and yet it charges him
$11 50 a year or something like
that, for the same protection it af-
fords the laborer at $1 50 a year.
The occupation tax is a poll tax, and
void for discrimination."
A meeting of the members of the
Texas press has been called at Aus-
tin on the 5th of February, to take
into consideration the propriety of
organizing another State Press As-
sociation. Editors and publishers
who will attend are requested to no-
tify the Austin Statesman. The
question of press dispatches will
come up for consideration, probably.
The railroad lobby at Austin is
said to be bitterly opposed to the
bill providing for designating and
setting apart 3,000,000 acres of land
for the new capitol. The railroads
probably entertain the hope of some-
time scooping up the bulk of these
lands themselves.

An Undeniable Truth.
You deserve to sufter, and if you live
a miserable, unsatisfactory life in this
beautiful world, it is entirely your own
fault and there is only one excuse for you,
—your unreasonable prejudice and skep-
ticism. which has killed thousands. Per.
sonal knowledge and common sense rea-
soning will soon show you that Green's
August Flower will cure you of liver
complaint or dyspepsia, with all its miser-
able effects, such as sick headache, palpi-
tation of the heart, sour stomach, habit-
ual costiveness, dizziness of the head,
nervous prostration, low spirits, etc. Its
sales now reach every town on the West-
ern Continent, and not a druggist but
that will tell you of its wonderful cures.
You can buy a sample bottle for 10 cents.
Three doses will relieve you.
To Sufferers.
Nearly every man, woman and child
suffers with these dread ailments, chron-
ic constipation, headache, both sick and
nervous, and all the ills attendant upon
such a condition of the system. There is
a remedy, Coleman's Concentrated White
Sulphur Spring Water. The evidence of
many of the most prominent men in the
State attest its virtues, and a remedy is at
hand of which all may avail themselves.
Price, 7<; cents per bottle. Sample bottle
25 cents. For sale at Dr. Hanna's and
Dr. Williams' Drug Stores, Denison

Reconstruction Impossible.
This may not be true as regards States
—indeed we know it is not; but it is abso-
lutely true as regards those delicate or-
gans, the human lungs. When they are
disorganized and partly consumed, they
cannot be restored to a healthy condition.
But bear in mind that this misfortune can
never happen if Hale's Honey of Hore-
hound and Tar is administered as a rem-
edy for the cough which always precedes
pulmonary consumption. Sold by drug-
gists everywhere at 50 cents and $1.
Great saving to get the large size. Pike's
Toothache Drops cure Toothache in one
minute. Sold by all druggists at 25
cents.
