ENTERED AT THE POST OFFICE
AT DENISON, TEXAS, AS SECOND
CLASS MATTER.
For the Colorad People.
To the worthless, criminal, vaga-
bond negroesof Grayson county, anil
Denison in particular, the article on
another pagt in regard to the use-
ful farming implement invented by
a Denison negro man named VVm.
W. Sauls, should carry a lesson
worthy their serious thought.
Whilst they are spending their days
in idleness, hanging around saloora
and gambling houses, brawling,
drinking, stealing and even doing
murder, this man Sauls, without
education or any more advantages
than all men possess—his own
thoughtfulness and latent talent
has made himself a name and
fortune by studying his own in-
terests, behaving himself and
attending to his business.
Those men, Russell and Porter,
who recently killed officers JNelms
and Johnston in this city had, both of
them, talents and brains enough to
have made good and useful citizens
had they been so inclined, but they
were not, and their colored brethren
see the end they have come to—in-
stead of good, honorable men, a
credit to themselves and an honor to
their race, they fill criminal graves
and cells, have done disgrace to
themselves and an injury to their
own people, as well as become a
stigma on the good name ot the com-
monwealth.
This we say to the colored people,
and we say it without prejudice and
in all kindness: Crime ?nd good gov-
ernment are as antagonistic as night
and day—where one comes the other
must cease. Good government is
necessary to the preservation of your
yery existence, as well as that of the
whites. To have it then, crime must
cease, and in order to uproot and
crush out crime, you must show it
no sympathy. Those of you who
have concealed, aided and exhibited
toward these criminals such marked
sympathy, or who, when they return
from punishment, welcome them
back, do themselves and socitety
and their race great injustice.
We feel and have always felt, a live-
ly solicitude for the prosperity and
welfare and elevation of the colored
people, and this sentiment is inher-
ent in the heart of every true South-
ern man. A thief or a murderer is
a bad man, whether white or black,
and the colored people must learn to
recognize character at its true value,
if they desire to prosper and be re-
spected. We say to them, one and
all, respect yourselves, maintain your
charactor and that of your families,
be upright law-abiding citizens, and
do not compromise yourselves by
even associating with criminals. La-
bor for the elevation of your race,
and every day the bond of kindly
feeling between you and the whites
will grow stronger. This country is
for us all. We must live in it peace-
ably or we must war, and all come
to grief. To live in peace and happi-
ness we must have good government,
and to have such honesty and virtue
must form the basis—honesty and
virtue among you as well as among
whites.
arUCIAL LOCALS.
A Bloolcade that Should bo Raised
Tne egress from the system of waste
material through the natural channels
should be rendered free, without loss of
time, when a blockade is produced by an
attack of constipation, a disorder which,
if it becomes chronic, is productive ot se-
rious bodily mischief. Jaundice, severe
headaches, nausen, dyspepsia, the usual
concomitants of the malady mentioned,
all indicate that the bodily functions are
materially inlertend with. Hostetler's
Hitters is particularly efficacious in cases
of this sort, and renders the habit of
body perfectly regular. It is a medicine
gieatlv to be preferred to drastic cathar-
tics, which are well calculated to drench,
but unhappily also to weaken the intes-
tines. We say unhappily, since such
medicines are the favorite resource of
many ill advised persons, who resort to
them upon the most trivial occasion, and
greatly to their discomfort and injury.

SHERMAN'S.
Prickly Ash Bitters
And Malarifuge,
THESE BITTERS wiil prevent con-
tracting of chill and all malarial dis-
eases if properly used, by invigorating the
liver, toning the stomach, and regulating
the bowels and kidneys. It is a prepara-
tion from such vegetable extracts of
which the Prickly Ash constitutes a lead-
ing part, that enters into the regular pre-
scription practice of all medical men,
among whom Dr. Sherman is justly
classed as the successful compounder af
ter an experimental practice of 30 years,
as a complete antidote to all influences
which, if not arrested in time, terminate
in chills and fever or other malarial dis-
eases.
Though pleasant to the taste, it is not a
beverage, (as the extracts are held in so-
lution in pure Holland gin only) because
of its cathartic properties, and is therefore
an infallible remedy for habitual constipa-
tion.
THE MALARIFUGE is a certain cure
for chills when once contracted. It has
never failed to effect a cure where the di-
rec'ions, which accompany each bottle,
are followed.
Druggists are hereby authorized to re-
fund the money to any party purchasing
who claims a cure is not effected, provid-
ing the directions are followed and the
empty bottle returned. For sale by all
druggists. 6,7 '79dwiy

General J, W. Whitfield died at
his home in Lavaca county on the
27th ult. In the old days of the
Kansas war when there was border-
ruffians, red legs and jayhawkers
Gen. Whitfield was a prominent
southern leader. He represented
the territory in congress. When it
became apparent that the northern
idea was destined to rule he moved
to Texas and settled down to the
life a of planter. The Galveston
New says he was a man of great
force of character, and much es-
teemed by those who knew him best.
Douglass Shannon, a West Texas
sheep raiser, who recently dipped a
flock of 2000, says the following is
the safest formula: Six pounds of
plug, eight of leaf, or ten of stem
tobacco to thirty gallons of water,
with one pound of sulphur added.
The sheep's head must be kept out
of the water to avoid swallowing the
poison. _____________
