FRIDAY JANUARY 9, 1880.
Beeclier, in out: of his recent stump
speeches, pronounced "the Bible no-
toriously false in some parts," and
left an uneasy public in anxious
doubt as to which parts hg meant.'
A bill has been filled in New
York by the bondholders to foreclose
mortgage 011 the Galveston, Houston
and Henderson railroad, lor arrears
of interest for 1877, 187S and 1S79.
The San Marcos Free Press keeps
the name of Samuel J. Tilden at the
head ot its editorial column; as a
candidate for president,( subject to
the decision of the national demo-
cratic convention.
The latest device for a church
benefit is a fox hunt. It took place
in Florisant valley, Mo. The church
furnished the foxes and the**t*flty
came along with their dogs, paid
$25 for the sport, and thus the cof-
fers of the church were greatly en-
j'iched.
Comptroller Knox writes that the
only legal tender quality silver cer-
tificates have is, that they are re-
ceivable for customs, taxes and all
public dues; and that there is no au-
thority of law for counting silver
certificates «s part of the lawful
money reserve which national banks
are required to hold.
A consolidation has been agreed
upon between the Burlington and
Quincy and the Missouri River
roads—subject to ratification of the
stockholders. The Qnincy stock-
holders get an increase of 21 per
cent, stock and the Missouri River
20 per cent., the combined compa-
nies to pay S per cent, annually.
The bell-punch law will soon be
taken to the court o^ appeal 011 a test
case from Galveston. The title of
the case is E. Reinecke et als vs. F.
R. Dean collector, and the latter
prays that the injunction granted by
Judge Williams restraining him Irom
paying taxes under ilie bell punch
law to the State be dissolved.
Gen. Joseph E. Johnson was
lately in Raleigh, and a gentleman
asked him rather pointedly why the
southern army did not take Wash-
ington after the first battle of Manas-
sas. Rising on his toes he replied:
"There were two reasons—myself
and the Potomac river. I had reach-
ed that age that I knew that an
American soldier could not ford a
river a mile wide and eighteen feet
deep."
SPECIAL LOCALS.
At the Recent Marriage of the yoilhu
Kin 1,' Alfonso of Spnfn, the bridal gilts
from royal peisonnges ot the different
European courts were otthe utmost mag-
nificence. It is reported that some wag
of an American sent a mysterious pack- !
age to the new-made queen, which caused '
great merriment, on account of its unex-
pected character. On unfolding numer-
oua coverings, there came to view a pretty j
ornamented box, which was found to con- 1
tain a choice selection of Gleen's Sulphur ]
Soap. Sold by all druggists.

Who is Mrs. WinslowP
Prickly Ash Bitters Fresh Oysters!
And Malarifuge. GEO, BRATJN,
Mr. Eugene Sloan, formerly one
of the proprietors of the Marshall
%Tri-Weekly Herald, commited sui-
cide last Saturday morning at the
Texas Pacific Hotel in that town by
shooting himself in the temple with
a pistol. FIc was alone when he
committed the ratal act, and it was
not known until he had been dead
sometime. The Herald says: "The
deceased was about thirty years old.
We had known him from his early
boyhood, and found him always
kind and generous. For the last six
or seven years he has been laboring
under nervous derangement, which
compelled him at last to abandon
business, which crushed out all his
aspirations and hopes, and blasted
his happiness, and finally termina-
ted, as we believed, in mental de-
rangement.
A bill is pending in the South
Carolina legislature which proposes
, to disfranchise all persons in that
State who cannot icad and write,
whereupon the Charleston News and
Courier advises the legislature to "go
slow," as the constitution provides
that "when the right to vote at any
election for the choice ot electors for
president and vice-pre ident of the
United States, representatives in con-
gress, the executive and judicial offi-
cers of a state, or the members of the
legislature thereof, is denied to any
of the male inhabitants of such state,
being twenty-one years of age and
citizens of the United States, or any-
way abridged, except for participa-
tion in rebellion or other crime, the
basis of repicsentation ^therein shall
be reduced in the proportion which
iIk number of such male citizen?/
shall bear to the whole number of
male citizens twenty-one years of
age in such state."
As this question is frequently asked, we
will simply say that she is a lady who for
upwards of thirty years, has untiringly
devoted her lime and talents as a female
phvsician and nurse, principally among
children, she has carefully studied the
constitution and wants of this numerous
class, and. as a result of this effort, and
practical knowledge, obtained in a life-
time spent as nurse and physician, she
compounded a soothing syrup for children
teething. It operates like magic—giving
rest and health, and is moreover, sure to
regulate the bowels. In consequence of
this article. Mrs. Winslow has become
world renowned as n benefactor of her
race; children certainly do rise up and
bless her; especially is this the cise in
this city. Vast quantities of the sooth-
ing syrup are daily sold and used here.
VVe think Mrs. Winslow has immortal-
ized her name by this invaluable article,
and we sincerely believe thousands of
children have been save(f from an early
jjruve by its timely use, and that millions
yet unborn will share its benefits, anil
unite in calling her blessed. No mother
has discharged her dutv to her suffering
little one, in our opinion, until she has
given it the benefit of Mrs. Winslow's
soothing syrup, Try it mothers—try it
now. —LadicC Visitor, New York City.

THESE BITTERS wiil prevent con-
tracting of chilli. and all malarial dis-
eases if properly used, by invigorating the
liver, toning the stomach, and regulating
the bowels and kidneys. It is a prepara-
tion from such vegetable extracts of
which the Prickly Ash constitutes a lead-
ing part, that enters into the regular pre-
scription practice of all medical men,
among whom Dr, Sherman is justly
classed as the successful compounder af>
ter an experimental practice of 30 years,
as a complete antidote to all influences
which, if not arrested in time, terminate
in chills and fever or other malarial dis-
eases.
Though pleasant to the taste, it is not a
beverage, (as the extracts are held in so-
lution in pure Holland gin only) because
of its cathartic properties, and is therefore
an infallible remedy for habitual constipa-
tion.
THE MALARIFUGE is a certain cure
lor chills when once contracted. It has
never failed to effect a cure where the di-
rections, which accompany each bottle,
are followed.
Druggists are hereby authorized to re-
fund the money to any party purchasing
who claims a cure is not effected, provid-
ing the directions are followed and the
